Weekend predictions: Quantumania looks to top $100 million on debut
February 17th, 2023
The Ant-Man sub-franchise has always been one of the quieter corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the first Ant-Man film opening with $57.2 million back in 2015, and Ant-Man and the Wasp debuting to $75.8 million in 2018. With that track record, and the post-pandemic market, an opening over $60 million should be considered a success for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It’s been tracking ahead of that number for a while though, and its Thursday previews suggest it will top $100 million this weekend—a welcome boost for a market that’s been waiting quite a while for a major release.

Weekend predictions: ’tis the weekend before Avatar, and nothing is stirring
December 9th, 2022
With holiday shopping in full swing, and Avatar: The Way of Water arriving next week, movie theaters will be very quiet this weekend. Unless something unexpected happens, this will be the second-slowest weekend of the year, behind the weekend of January 28, when Spider-Man: No Way Home recorded its sixth weekend win with a modest $11 million. Black Panther: Wakana Forever is predicted to top the chart for a fifth time this weekend, with our model thinking it’ll earn about $13.5 million. If it can’t top $10 million (which is a possibility), this might prove to be the slowest weekend of the year.

Weekend predictions: Violent Night shooting for second place on slow weekend
December 2nd, 2022
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever shouldn’t have much trouble staying top at the box office this weekend, with a hodgepodge of new releases aiming to pick up the slack coming off Thanksgiving, but none of them looking likely to do huge business. The film with the best shot at coming second is Violent Night, while Top Gun: Maverick and I Heard the Bells could shake up the top 10.

Weekend predictions: Black Panther unchallenged at top of chart, The Menu looks like the best of the rest
November 18th, 2022
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will easily win its second box office crown this weekend, helped by a lack of direct competition and the tailwinds of a $181-million opening weekend. Our model thinks $70 million will be around a par score for the Marvel movie, and no new release will come within $50 million of that. Three new films come in with a shot at second place: The Menu, She Said, and The Chosen. Of those three, our model thinks The Menu has the best shot at taking that honor.

Weekend predictions: Black Panther will break November record, but maybe not the $200-million barrier
November 11th, 2022
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever earned $28 million from previews on Thursday, the 15th-best preview figure in history, and notably higher than the $25.2 million earned by the original Black Panther back in 2018. That sets it on a path to break the record for the biggest weekend in November, currently held by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire with $158 million, but our model thinks topping $200 million will be a hard task.

Weekend predictions: Black Adam looks set to hold on at the top
November 4th, 2022
Black Adam looks likely to take advantage of the calm before the Wakandan storm to top the box office chart again this weekend. Our model thinks it will land somewhere in the region of $17.6 million, which should be easily enough to hold off newcomer One Piece Film: Red.
