Weekend predictions: Book Club heading for third place as Guardians, Mario dominate
May 12th, 2023
It’s counter-programming week in movie theaters, with four new wide releases trying to lure audiences that aren’t into (or have already seen) The Super Mario Bros. Movie or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, with the goal of earning some money before Fast X steamrollers the competition next weekend. Book Club: The Next Chapter is the film most likely to come out on top among the new releases, but a third-place finish is the best-case scenario for the romantic comedy.

Weekend predictions: Guardians of the Galaxy headed for $110-million weekend
May 5th, 2023
Everything we know so far about the performance of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 points towards an opening weekend close to $110 million. That’ll knock The Super Mario Bros. Movie off top spot, but the video game adaptation won’t have any trouble holding on to second spot as Love Again looks likely to struggle.

Weekend predictions: $40 million on the cards for Creed III
March 3rd, 2023
Creed III looks likely to have the best opening weekend for a film in the Creed franchise, which (not adjusted for inflation) would also give it the best opening for a Rocky movie too, at least based on its excellent $5.45 million in previews, and our model’s expectations. Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre looks like an also-ran, unfortunately. Meanwhile, Ant-Man and Cocaine Bear keep things interesting as our model picks apart this weekend’s box office prospects.

Weekend projections: Cocaine Bear and Jesus Revolution exceed expectations as Ant-Man crashes
February 26th, 2023
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is headed for the worst 2nd-weekend decline for a movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but will still cling on to top spot at the box office, according to the studios’ Sunday-morning projections. Cocaine Bear and Jesus Revolution feel more like the real winners of the weekend though, with both films turning in excellent performances.

Weekend predictions: Cocaine Bear and Jesus Revolution battle for second place
February 24th, 2023
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania goes into the weekend a hot favorite to retain its spot at the top of box office chart. Even a steep fall from its $106.1-million opening should leave it well ahead of the two new wide releases. Which debutant finishes second is a more interesting question, and one that we don’t know with absolute certainty going into the weekend. Horror comedy Cocaine Bear should come in ahead of the faith-based drama Jesus Revolution, but it could be a close race.

Weekend projections: Ant-Man delivers $104-million 3-day debut
February 19th, 2023
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will fall a little short of our Friday-morning prediction this weekend, but it’ll clear the psychologically-important $100 million bar, according to Disney’s Sunday-morning projection. Its $104-million debut is significantly higher than the $57.2 million earned by Ant-Man and $75.8 million made by Ant-Man and the Wasp on their first weekends. The studio also notes that it’s the 31st consecutive MCU release to top the chart on opening weekend.

Weekend predictions: Quantumania looks to top $100 million on debut
February 17th, 2023
The Ant-Man sub-franchise has always been one of the quieter corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the first Ant-Man film opening with $57.2 million back in 2015, and Ant-Man and the Wasp debuting to $75.8 million in 2018. With that track record, and the post-pandemic market, an opening over $60 million should be considered a success for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It’s been tracking ahead of that number for a while though, and its Thursday previews suggest it will top $100 million this weekend—a welcome boost for a market that’s been waiting quite a while for a major release.
