Synopsis

It's known as one of the toughest institutions in America - a home for the best and brightest who are driven to serve their country and a training facility where only the strongest survive. It's a rarified world that, by necessity, makes or breaks tomorrow's heroes. And for local Maryland kid Jake Huard the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis has been a lifelong dream he never thought could come true. Only now that it has, he is about to realize that his battle to become the man he always wanted to be is only just beginning.

Benchwarmers Hit Home Run... make that a Ground Rule Double

Clear Sailing for Launch

July 15th, 2006

A near total lack of competition allowed Failure to Launch to remain in first place with $8.87 million over the week for a two-week total of $19.41 million. More...

Spectacular Launch

Failure to Launch wasn't the only new DVD release to chart this week, but it was far and away the best. The film took first place with $10.42 million, which was nearly double its nearest competition. More...

DVD Releases for June 27, 2006

June 26th, 2006

It's an absolutely horrid week for DVD releases with six or seven contenders for DVD Pick of the Week, I have no idea how I'm going to afford to buy them all. But I will buy them all. Oh yes, I will buy them all. While the latest Masters of Horror collection was high on my list, as was Why We Fight - Buy from Amazon and Imagine Me & You - Buy from Amazon, (but for widely different reasons), I went with the criminally underrated Yellowbeard - Buy from Amazon as my DVD Pick of the Week. Maybe one day it will get the Special Edition treatment it so richly deserves. More...

Momma's So Big

January 30th, 2006

Practically every film in the top five was able to beat, or at least meet expectations, and that helped the month end on a strong note. Overall the weekend box office take was $126 million, up 5.1% from last weekend and more importantly, up 2.2% from last year. So far 2006 has brought in $662 million, which 1.4% ahead of last year's pace. More...

Sick Selection for End of Month

January 27th, 2006

Three more films open wide this weekend, but only one of them will crack the 2,000 theater mark. This means that, while January will likely end on a soft note, there could be an interesting race or two in the top five. On a side note, this column was unfortunately delayed because I am really, really sick. How sick am I? Too sick to come up with a punch line for that joke. But I am starting to like the taste of NyQuil, if you can imagine. More...

2006 Preview: January

January 2nd, 2006

It's the beginning of a new year, January 1st, 2006 (or at least it was when I wrote this). The good news is 2005 is finally over. The bad news is 2006 again starts with the month of January, which is always a really slow way to start the year. This is a real dead month when it comes to new releases, in fact, of the 10 new releases coming out this month, I'm excited about seeing... none. (There are a few movies that could be popular among their target demographic, but I'm just not in those groups.) But at least there are a few Oscar contenders that opened in limited release last month that are looking to go wide sometime during the month and that is the only real saving grace. More...
