Limited and VOD Releases: Serving a Fresh Dish of Revenge
May 11th, 2018
It is a busier week than average with quite a few limited releases that are earning great reviews, some of which are also earning loud buzz. Revenge is one such film and it is playing on Video on Demand, so you don’t have to go to a theater to see it.

Home Market Releases for October 17th, 2017
October 18th, 2017
It is one of those weeks. There’s a massive release coming out, which has scared away nearly all of the competition, so it is a really shallow week. Fortunately, that huge release is Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is not only one of the biggest hits of the year, it is also one of the reviewed. It isn’t the only contender for Pick of the Week, but the Blu-ray Combo Pack wins that honor.

DVD and Blu-ray Releases for November 4th, 2014
November 5th, 2014
Christmas shopping season is definitely here. This week there is a flood of Christmas releases, as well as full-series TV on DVD Megasets. On the other hand, there isn't a flood of contenders for Pick of the Week. The biggest release of the week is Maleficent and I really liked the movie more than the average critic, but I don't think the DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack is Pick of the Week material. A Most Wanted Man is a better movie, but the DVD or Blu-ray release is weak. The same is true of Land Ho! on Blu-ray Combo Pack and The One I Love on DVD or Blu-ray. I haven't seen White Collar: Season 5 yet, but given the previous seasons, the DVD is Pick of the Week contender. I'm going with that selection and hopefully when the DVD arrives I won't regret that decision.

Limited Releases: Going Mental for Limited Releases
March 29th, 2013
It's kind of a mixed week when it comes to limited releases. There are quite a few of them, but not many that have good reviews and strong buzz. The best of these is Blancanieves, which I thought opened previously. There are some with good reviews and some with buzz, but not a lot that scream hit. The Place Beyond the Pines probably has the best chance at hitting major milestones.

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Life of Pi
March 21st, 2013
Life of Pi had the kind of buzz most films would kill for. From the very beginning, it was seen as a major player during Awards Season. In the end, it won four Oscars, including the second Best Director Oscar win for Ang Lee. On the other hand, many critics, even those who gave the film positive reviews, said it was more impressive as a technical achievement than has a story. Will I be won over by the story? Will I merely like the film's technical prowess? Or will I be one of the rare critics to simply not like the movie at all?
