Streaming Releases: Big Stars Coming to a Screen Near You
July 10th, 2020
The first week of the month is usually the busiest for streaming services, so it is no surprise that this week is slower than last week. There are a few interesting items on this week’s list though, and it’s a sign of the times that some of the biggest names at the box office are in leading roles. Greyhound, the World War II action movie starring Tom Hanks, is the standout release of the weekend, and Charlize Theron, Andy Samberg, and Cate Blanchett all have new movies or shows debuting.

Will These Limited and Virtual Releases have Audiences in the Palm of Their Hands?
July 9th, 2020
I am not hopeful about this weekend’s box office chances. Granted, there are some movies earning stellar reviews, but none of them have a hope of box office success. Palm Springs is the biggest and arguably best film on this week’s list, but it is also streaming on Hulu, so I expect it to go nowhere at the box office.

Featured TV on DVD Review: The Venture Bros.: Season Seven
June 3rd, 2019
The Venture Bros. reminds me of Archer, a show I recently reviewed. I watched both shows from the beginning, but both shows fell off my list of shows I watch every week. It wasn’t due to the quality of the show, I simply stopped subscribing to the channel it aired on. So this is the first time that I’ve gotten the chance to see the show in many years. Is it as good as I remember it? Or has it aged poorly over the past few seasons?

Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: The Wolf of Wall Street
March 23rd, 2014
The Wolf of Wall Street is the latest film from Martin Scorsese and stars Leonardo DiCaprio. Not surprisingly, it was considered an Awards Season favorite from the time it was announced. The last time Martin Scorsese directed a movie that didn't earn at least overall positive reviews was Boxcar Bertha back in 1972, which is so long ago that we don't even have it in our database. That's a winning streak that is probably second to none. Since the year 2000, he has released six movies (not counting documentaries) and five of those six have earned multiple Oscar nominations. Combined, they have earned 14 Oscar wins. On the other hand, this film earned weaker reviews than expected and was shut out on Oscar night. So is this film weaker than than average for his recent work? Or has he simply made so many great movies that the expectations are just too high?
