Limited and VOD Releases: These Limited Releases will Never Surrender
November 29th, 2019
Thanksgiving is one of the biggest weekends for wide releases, but it is a terrible week for limited releases. If I kept my usual rule about minimum number of reviews to be on this list, then there would be just a handful of films to talk about. Fortunately, all of them are worth checking out. The Two Popes is the biggest in terms of buzz, but its limited theatrical release window will keep it from doing particularly well in theaters. I’m most interested in Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary, but I hope The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open does very well.

Home Market Releases for September 3rd, 2019
September 4th, 2019
It’s another short week with not a lot to talk about. The biggest release of the week is Men in Black International, but it missed expectations by a significant margin. The best first-run release is Booksmart, which also missed expectations by a significant margin, but it is still good enough to be a Pick of the Week contender. In fact, it’s only competition is My Hero Academia: Season Three, Part Two. It came down to a literal coin toss and My Hero Academia won, but both deserve the title.

Featured Blu-ray Review: The Prisoner
June 10th, 2019
The Prisoner is a film from the 1950s that was based on a play of the same name, which, in turn, was based inspired by the real life trials of a couple of cardinals. When the film was initially released, the response was mixed, to put it mildly. On the one extreme, the film earned five BATFA nominations and even won the Best Foreign Film at the National Board of Review that year. On the other hand, it was banned in a number of countries for being pro-communist, anti-communist, and anti-Catholic. Being controversial isn’t the same as being good, but the contradictory nature of these bannings is what drew me to the film.

Home Market Releases for March 12th, 2019
March 13th, 2019
It’s not a good week on the home market. There are some big releases, like Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, but none of them are good. There are a couple of contenders for Pick of the Week, but the The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends: The Complete Series DVD is a re-release at a more reasonable price, while it is worth waiting to get the The Miseducation of Cameron Post: Special Edition Blu-ray. In the end, I went with a late screener, The Forbidden Photos Of A Lady Above Suspicion: Collector’s Edition Blu-ray. It is definitely the best bet for fans of Giallo and / or Film Noir.
