New Year’s Day lands on a Tuesday and I don’t think there are many people who celebrate the new year by buying a Blu-ray. That said, while there’s not a lot of releases on this week’s list, a surprising percentage of them are first-run releases. Love, Gilda is the only real contender for Pick of the Week. Bad Times at the El Royale is the second best, but I want to be able to watch the full thing for my review before coming up with a final judgment.

2018 was a great year for Documentaries with several that earned more than $1 million at the box office. Love, Gilda didn’t get to that milestone, although it was playing on VOD at the time. Is it as good as some of the top box office draws in the genre? Or does it have a more limited target audience.

Limited and VOD Releases: Starting to Love Awards Season

It is not a particularly busy week for limited releases, as there are only nine films on the main list. However, several of them could do very well at the box office. Of these, I’m the most bullish about Colette and The Sisters Brothers, but there are two documentaries, Love, Gilda and Nothing Like a Dame, that could also open in the $10,000 club. All four could earn some Awards Season glory.
