VOD Releases: Orange You Glad we have VOD?

The Burnt Orange Heresy

There are some excellent VOD releases coming out this week, including Yes, God, Yes and The Truth. However, there are also some films that are not quite as stellar, but would still make great VOD rentals, like The Burnt Orange Heresy. Here’s a rundown of what’s new.

Highlights

The Burnt Orange Heresy
Amazon or Vudu
A heist movie about an art dealer looking to steal a rare painting and what happens when his plan spins out of control. The reviews are good, but not great. That said, they are certainly good enough for a $6 rental, especially if you are a fan of this genre and / or the cast, which includes Elizabeth Debicki, Donald Sutherland, and Mick Jagger.

Chicago Fire: Season Eight - Amazon
Chicago Med: Season Five - Amazon
I’m putting these two TV shows into one entry, because they are part of the same TV universe. Both have earned some level of critical acclaim and clearly they have a large enough audience to keep going. Cord cutters now have the chance to watch them.

Hard Kill
Google Play, iTunes, or Vudu
Another horrible Bruce Willis movie where he phones in a performance while looking to make a paycheck. He keeps making these, so I assume they keep making a profit, or he wouldn’t still be getting so much work. I just wish he would make a movie he was excited to make, so he could show the world he can still act. It has been a while.

Human Lost
Amazon
An anime movie set in a cyberpunk world in which the richest can conquer death through the injection of nanobots. There are not a lot of reviews out there, although that is very common for films like this. But, most of the reviews are positive. Fans of the genre should check it out and I think adult fans of animation in general will find it worth their time and money.

Rogue
Amazon or Amazon (4K UHD)
This film has some of the louder buzz on this week’s list, even though there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes yet. It doesn’t come out on VOD until Friday, while it reaches DVD / Blu-ray on Tuesday. Megan Fox does give the film more star power than most on this list, so perhaps that will be the advantage it needs in a crowded market.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow
Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, or Vudu
Yet another installment in the animated D.C.E.U. There are few reviews for this film, but nearly all of the ones I’ve read are positive.

The Truth
Amazon
This film would have had a real shot at box office success under normal circumstances, as it has a lot of star power compared to most limited releases and its reviews are stellar. However, the art house circuit was hit particularly hard by the effects of the pandemic. The home market has performed a lot better, so this film’s chances on VOD are better than average.

Yes, God, Yes
Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, or Vudu
Natalia Dyer stars in this coming-of-age comedy about a Catholic High School student in the early 2000s who discovers something on the internet that awakens something impure in her. This film has already had a virtual release and was previously released as an EST VOD. This week it hit DVD and you can now also rent it on VOD. Personally, I think buying the DVD is the better deal, but a VOD rental will cost less if you end up watching the film only once.
