VOD Releases: Humming a Cheerful Tune
August 5, 2020
It is a very busy week for VOD releases, but sadly this is mostly a case of quantity over quality with most of them not earning much buzz. There are three films that stand out, though—Lake Michigan Monster, House of Hummingbird, and Ride Your Wave—and a couple of others that will appeal to adult animation fans and family audiences.
Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons
House of Hummingbird
Lake Michigan Monster
Ride Your Wave
The Secret Garden
Aliens Stole My Body - Google Play, iTunes, or Vudu
Highlights
Amazon, Google Play, or Vudu
The latest release in the DC Animated Universe, which has had better quality than their movie universe. This one is more violent than most, so keep that in mind. It also doesn’t have enough reviews out yet to judge its quality, but again, the DCAU has a track-record that’s solid enough to warrant at least a rental. Of course, you will have to wait until the 18th to be able to rent it and by then there should be more than enough reviews out to judge if a $20 purchase is worth it.

14-year-old Eun-hee moves through life like a hummingbird searching for a taste of sweetness wherever she may find it. This film hit theaters just over a month ago, but it is the wrong genre for limited release in the age of COVID-19, so it didn’t find an audience then. Hopefully it will find the audience it deserves on the home market. Personally, I’m sticking with the Blu-ray, but I’m in the minority here.
iTunes or Google Play
A slice of intentional B-movie humor with a Lovecraftian feel. The reviews are overwhelmingly positive and the movie even earned some film festival awards. That said, it does have a niche appeal and it might be something you want to rent before you buy.
Amazon VOD (Japanese Language Version), Amazon VOD (English Language Version), Google Play, iTunes, or Vudu
This anime release is directed by Masaaki Yuasa, who previously directed Mind Game; Lu over the Wall; The Night is Short, Walk on Girl; not to mention some anime series. His track-record is incredible and this movie is no different. In fact, its Blu-ray was named Pick of the Week.
Official Site
A family film based on a beloved British novel. It was aiming for a wide release, but the pandemic has forced it to go PVOD instead. Additionally, while the reviews are good, they are not great and that further hurts its prospects. If you grew up reading the novel, then maybe it is worth the PVOD price when it is released on Friday, but for most, I think they should wait until they can rent it for the regular price.
