Theatrical Update: Invisible Man Reappears at the Box Office
June 16, 2020
We still have very few distributors actually releasing box office numbers, so there’s no real change at the weekend box office chart compared to last week, when it comes to films with official numbers released. However, Deadline is reporting a top ten with The Invisible Man coming out on top with an estimated $383,000 over the weekend for a total of $67.8 million so far. This represents a 37% growth from last week. The film climbed ahead of Trolls World Tour, which dipped 9% to $276,000 over the weekend for a total of $3.6 million after ten weeks of release.
As for films for which we have actual box office numbers, Becky dipped just 9% to $188,000 in 50 locations, giving the Quiver release a two-week total of $483,000. With no new major releases coming in the next few weeks, it should be able to reach $1 million domestically. Meanwhile, IFC Midnight continued to celebrate the release of The Wretched, as it earned $148,000 in 99 theaters over the weekend for a total of $1.37 million after seven weeks of release.
Since Tenet’s release date was pushed back two weeks, studios are clearly assuming there won’t be much theatrical business until the end of July, at the earliest. The two films that will be the first to test that theory are The Broken Hearts Gallery and Unhinged, both of which will now debut on July 10 (according to current plans). A re-release of Inception follows on July 17 (replacing Tenet on that date).
The really big test, if it sticks to its date, will be Mulan, which Disney has booked for July 24. They might keep that date in place to satisfy growing demand in international markets, which might be looking a lot stronger by then. Prospects for the US market depend heavily on how the pandemic unfolds over the next few weeks, and on the movie-going public's feelings towards sitting in crowded movie theaters again. Those are two very difficult trends to predict right now.
