Weekend Wrap-Up: Wretched Remains Unbeatable
June 1, 2020
Another weekend has passed, and The Wretched remains lodged in top spot on the box office chart. This week the film pulled in $176,000 in 75 theaters for a running tally of $836,000 after a month of release. It is on pace to crack $1 million by this time next week. It is rare for a limited-release horror film to reach this milestone under the best of circumstances, so it is really worth celebrating now. It also wasn’t the only glimmer of light on the box office front.
We Summon the Darkness landed in second place with $26,000 in 6 theaters over the weekend for a total of $61,000 after two. It declined 14% during its sophomore stint, but it also lost 40% of its theaters, so its theater average actually rose. This is a positive sign going forward and it could mean we will see a few more horror films released in drive-ins before the summer is done.
Overall reported box office for the weekend was just $204,456, down a little from Memorial Day weekend. The general trend is upwards though—two weeks ago, reported box office was just $136,242, and four weeks ago it was only $92,387. While the total is heavily dependent on who is reporting, it should continue to climb as more theaters open around the country. We are still far short of enough business to support anything other than small independent films though.
