International Box Office: Frozen II Puts a Chill on the Competition

Frozen II dominated the international box office the way few films manage, earning $228.2 million in 37 markets for a worldwide debut of $358.2 million. This includes a $54.38 million debut in China, which is more than the second place film earned on the worldwide chart. In fact, the movie earned more in South Korea with a total opening of $32.31 million on 2,648 screens, including $28.10 million over the weekend than the second place film on the worldwide chart earned. In the U.K., it pulled in $19.36 million in 671 theaters, while it also cracked $10 million in both Germany ($14.9 million) and France ($13.4 million). Furthermore, the film has yet to open in Italy, Russia, Australia, and Brazil, so it isn’t done yet and should remain on top of the chart for a few weeks.

Ford v Ferrari was pushed into second place with $14.7 million in 43 markets for totals of $45.8 million internationally and $103.5 million worldwide. The film had no major market debuts this past weekend, but it was down an average of just 35% in holdovers and that suggests long enough legs to nearly crack $100 million internationally even without new markets left to debut in. Additionally, the film has yet to open in South Korea and Japan, while it doesn’t have a release date in China, that could change soon.

Joker remained in third place with $8.2 million on 5,322 screens in 77 markets for totals of $710.0 million internationally and $1.037 billion worldwide. It is cruising on holdovers and won’t last in the top five too much longer, but it has been a record-breaking run so far.

Last Christmas rose to fourth place with $7.2 million in 26 markets for totals of $24.5 million internationally and $52.4 million worldwide. The film had no major market openings this past weekend, but rose on the chart thanks to great holds. For example, the film was down just 16% during its second weekend in the U.K. earning $2.89 million in 616 theaters for a total of $8.68 million so far.

It appears Somewhere Winter earned fifth place, but it is a close call with Terminator: Dark Fate. The Chinese film earned $5.57 million in its native market over the weekend for a two-week total of $27.01 million there. It also has a little bit from Australia and New Zealand, probably giving it fifth place as a result. It is close enough that the ranking could change just based on when you convert local currencies to American dollars.
