Theater Averages: All Gain for Pain
October 10, 2019
Pain and Glory dominated the theater average earning an average of $40,022 in four theaters. Joker was next with an average of $21,994 in over 4,000 theaters. The final film in the $10,000 Club this weekend was My Country, My People with an average of $13,069 in 67 theaters. That is very impressive and could be a portent of things to come as Chinese films gain a foothold in the domestic market.
There were only a couple of other new limited releases that did well. Célébration earned $7,904 in one theater over the weekend. Meanwhile, War earned an average of $5,271 in 305 theaters over the weekend, while its five-day average was $6,934. The only other new limited release to do well was The Battle of Jangsari, which earned an average of $4,276 in two theaters.
There were also several films to miss the Mendoza Line ($2,000 per theater). The Climbers only managed an average of $1,530 in 102 theaters. Lucy in the Sky was close behind with an average of $1,461 in 37 theaters. The Woman Who Loves Giraffes only managed an average of $1,384 in two theaters. Roger Waters: Us + Them only managed an average of $636 in 396 theaters; however, it was a midweek special engagement with limited showings, so it is not as bad as this number looks at first. It’s far from good, but it is not as bad as it looks. Wrinkles the Clown only managed an average of $393 in 21 theaters, but it was playing on Video on Demand, so that’s a mitigating factor.
This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:
