Theater Averages: Everyone is Talking about Beale Street

There was only one new release in the $10,000 club this past weekend. If Beale Street Could Talk opened with an average of $56,119 in four theaters. The only other member of the $10,000 club was Mary Queen of Scots, with an average of $10,602 in 66 theaters during its second week of release. It will continue to expand, but it very likely won’t expand even semi-wide.

Most of the rest of the new limited releases struggled, to be kind. The only exception was Capernaum, which earned an average of $8,329 in three theaters. On the other hand, Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki only managed an average of $2,475 in four theaters over the weekend, although it had a special screening in many more theaters on Thursday. The Second Time Around opened with $1,600 in one theater. The House That Jack Built “opened” with an average of $1,071 in 32 theaters. (It has previously had a single-day run in November.) The Quake’s opening weekend average was just $465 in seven theaters, but it was also playing on VOD, so its theatrical numbers are immaterial. The same can’t be said for That Way Madness Lies, which only managed an average of $290 in two theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

• The Favourite got to $6 million over the weekend and it still has room to grow.
• Beautiful Boy lasted long enough to get to $7.5 million, which was unexpected. That is as far as it will go, on the other hand.
• Green Book got to $20 million before the weekend and almost made it to $25 million during the weekend. There has been controversy over historical inaccuracies, which could hurt its Awards Season chances, which in turn could hurt its box office chances.
