International Box Office: Bohemian Rhapsody Challenges Grindelwald for Top Spot

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald remained in first place on the international chart with $40.8 million on 18,922 screens in 80 markets for totals of $386.9 million internationally and $521.4 million worldwide. Its biggest market of the weekend was Japan, where it added $7.5 million to its running tally, which now sits at $25.6 million. Its biggest market overall is China, where it has $56.65 million, including $2.37 million this past weekend, followed by the U.K. with $33.8 million, including $3.5 million this past weekend.
Bohemian Rhapsody was very close behind with $37.01 million in 72 markets for totals of $375.14 million internationally and $539.47 million worldwide. The film had a surprisingly strong start in Italy with $6.13 million. However, South Korea continues to lead the way with $6.56 million on 1,103 screens over the weekend for a total of $47.62 million after a month of release.
Ralph Breaks the Internet was next with $33.7 million in 27 markets for early totals of $87.7 million internationally and $206.8 million worldwide. It only had one major market opening, the U.K., where it earned first place with $5.2 million. The original made $7.1 million during its debut in that market, but it also opened at the beginning of school holidays there, so it got a substantial boost as a result. Meanwhile, the film was down just 47% in China earning $10.27 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $34.30 million.
The Grinch returned to the top five earning fourth place with $27.1 million in 53 markets for totals of $64.8 million internationally and $268.5 million worldwide. The film opened in a number of major markets this past weekend, led by Germany ($3.75 million in 656 theaters) and France ($3.70 million on 630). It also cracked $2 million in Australia ($2.87 million in 279 theaters); Italy ($2.11 million in 452); and Spain ($2.04 million in 339). The film has already covered its entire $75 million production budget and a sizable chunk of its advertising budget as well.
A Cool Fish rounded out the top five with $25.48 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $90.58 million internationally. The film remained in first place in China with $24.34 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $90.31 million. The rest has come from Australia and a couple of other markets.
