Home Market Releases for October 16th, 2018

Ant-Man and the Wasp is coming out on DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, and 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack this week and it is scaring away most of the competition. Fortunately, it is also an amazing movie and a Contender for Pick of the Week. It isn’t the only contender, as both Mamoru Hosoda Movie Collection (Blu-ray) and Whitney (DVD or Blu-ray) were in the race. However, in the end, I went with Ant-Man and the Wasp.

This show stumbled during its third season, but the reviews bounced back during season four. If you were close to dropping it before, you should probably come back now.

The MCU has been unstoppable, especially this year. The combined three MCU releases this year earned nearly $1.6 billion domestically. This film is by far the weakest in terms of box office numbers, but is it also the weakest in terms of quality? Would that even be an insult at this point? Read our review to find out.
I previously reviewed this show. If you already own the show, then this isn’t worth the upgrade. However, if you don’t own it, and you are a fan of the Evil Dead movie franchise, it is a must have. And if you know a fan who hasn’t seen the show... Christmas is coming soon and this would make an excellent gift.
I previously reviewed the Blu-ray debut of this film, but this week it is coming out on 4K Ultra HD for the first time. I haven’t made the leap to 4K, so I didn’t get a screener to review, but the sales numbers suggest a lot of people who have a 4K system are buying this one. Also coming out this week is a Gift Set which includes some physical extras.
This is an action movie from the Philippines about a drug bust gone horribly wrong. Its reviews were good, but not great, while it really struggled in limited release. Does it deserve to find an audience in the home market? Read our review to find out.
This film is widely considered a classic and I had a chance to review it; however, I had already put in too many requests for this week, so I couldn’t take on another review. If you don’t own it, then this is absolutely worth picking up.
The Blu-ray is supposed to come out this week, but you can only buy it used on Amazon. Also, the description is for Buffalo Girls. I would tell Amazon about these problems, but I’ve never seen them correct something when I’ve sent in reports in the past. Last Minute Update: They fixed the description, but now the release date is the 23rd. I don’t know what to say at this point.
Video on Demand
When I first talked about this film, its reviews were 76% positive. By the end of the weekend, they had fallen to 50%. Were the initial reviews more accurate? Or is this a 50% positive film? Check out our review for my opinion.
This isn’t a good movie, but if you are a fan of Hammer horror films from the 1970s, then it is worth checking out. There must be a lot of people who are fans, because it is selling surprisingly well.
This is a three and a half hour long documentary from HBO about the early life and career of Elvis Presley. If you are a fan of the King of Rock and Roll, then this is a must have. If you are just a fan of documentaries in general, then it is still worth picking up. However, there’s a lot of competition for documentaries this year, including another one on this week’s list.
This is the 1956 classic and not the 1978 remake, which is also a classic. I think most people are like me and will prefer whichever one they saw first, and for me that’s the 1978 version. That said, this is a must have if you are a fan of Sci-fi Horror in general, both versions are must haves.
Mamoru Hosoda’s latest film, Mirai, is earning 100% positive reviews. The four films featured in this box set average 88% positive. This set is a must have for fans of the director or Anime in general. In fact, it’s a must have for adult fans of animation.
Seven angels are sent to Earth to find a potential savior. Each angel represents one of the seven virtues, but each angel fails to live up to them. As bad as the angels are, the Anime is worse. It’s bad ecchi and even if you are a fan of the genre, there are much, much better options out there.
A failed TV pilot from 1975. While the show wasn’t picked up, the TV movie went on to earn cult status and a lot of people will be excited to pick up this Blu-ray.
While I’m not part of the target audience for this franchise, I have to congratulate Hallmark Channel for creating a franchise that has lasted so many seasons / TV movies.
One of several documentaries that earned more than $1 million at the box office this year. This one got there mostly thanks to a very wide, for a documentary, opening and struggled to stay in theaters after that. Its reviews are amazing, so it is worth picking up. Extras are limited to an audio commentary track and an image gallery, but that’s still better than most documentaries get and it is enough to be a Pick of the Week contender.

There’s not a lot of secondary Blu-ray releases that really jump out at me. I love Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life, but this is not its Blu-ray debut. I’ve heard good things about Snow White with the Red Hair, while Criterion rarely puts out bad releases, so Shampoo is interesting.
