Weekend Estimates: Solo and Deadpool put New Releases In their Place
June 3, 2018
We predicted Solo: A Star Wars Story would earn about $30 million during its second weekend of release and it earned $29.3 million over the weekend. I’m calling that a victory. It did fall 65%, but this is a standard decline for a tentpole release after a holiday weekend. The film has $148.89 million after 10 days of release and is on pace to top $200 million domestically. Internationally it has $115.3 million, including $30.3 million this past weekend. It doesn’t open in Japan until the end of June, but once it does, it should reach $400 million worldwide. Had the film not needed extensive reshoots, this would have been enough to break even, eventually.
Deadpool 2 earned $23.33 million over the weekend for a total of $254.65 million after three-weeks of release. The film is already profitable and will reach $300 million by the end of its domestic run; however, it isn’t living up to the first film.
Adrift opened in third place with $11.5 million over the weekend. Its reviews are good, but it only managed a B from CinemaScore, so the audiences were not as enthusiastic. Anything less than a B plus usually results in weak legs and if it does drop significantly next weekend, then theater owners might not be too interested in keeping it around once June's monster hits are released.
Infinity War managed fourth place with $10.37 million over the weekend for a total of $642.87 million after six weeks of release. This will be its last weekend in the top five, but it remains on pace for fourth place on the All-time domestic chart.
Thanks to weaker than expected competition, Book Club was able to grab fifth place with $6.8 million for a three-week total of $47.3 million. This is amazing for a film that reportedly cost just $10 million to make.
Upgrade was next with $4.46 million in just 1,457 theaters over the weekend. The film earned 85% postive reviews, but was too small to be tracked by CinemaScore. That said, its internal multiplier was 2.65, which suggests reasonable legs. I don’t think it is going to expand significantly this coming weekend, but I also don’t think it will be pushed out of theaters after just two weeks of release either.
The same can’t be said for Action Point, which bombed earning just $2.31 million in 2,032 theaters. Its reviews are some of the worst of the year and it only managed a C plus from CinemaScore. Add in its anemic $1,137 theater average, the worst in the top ten, and theater owners will be looking to drop this one as soon as they are contractually obligated.
On the limited release front, American Animals opened with $140,000 in just four theaters, while A Kid Like Jake just missed the $10,000 club with $9,063 in its one theater.
