Theater Averages: Phantom Hangs on by a Thread with $18,513

Phantom Thread

Phantom Thread was the only film in the $10,000 club this past weekend, earning an average of $18,513 in 62 theaters.

There were only a handful of other new limited releases and the only one that came close to the $10,000 mark was Memories of Underdevelopment, which earned $8,224 in just one theater. My Art also opened in one theater earning $5,538. The final film to avoid the Mendoza Line was Vazante, which earned $3,489, again in one theater. Condorito: The Movie wasn’t as lucky, as it earned an opening of just $1,624, but it was playing in a lot more than 1 theater, it was playing in 152 theaters to be precise. The final film was Parchi, which bombed earning an average of just $833 in 39 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • I, Tonya continues to expand, topping $10 million, if you include holiday Monday.
  • The Disaster Artist hit $20 million over the weekend, but that’s likely as far as it will go.
  • Molly’s Game surpassed $20 million over the weekend. However, its theater average is low enough that it will start losing theaters very quickly.
  • The Post expanded wide, reaching $20 million over the weekend and $25 million, if you include holiday Monday.
  • The Shape of Water hit $25 million over the weekend and it should have no trouble getting to $30 million, maybe more if it wins more awards.
  • Darkest Hour peaked at the box office, but that didn’t stop it from hitting $35 million over the weekend. It is now the third biggest limited release hit of the year and the 67th biggest hit overall.
  • Lady Bird got to $35 million before the weekend. It is the second biggest limited release of the year, but it will need to win awards to maintain this position.
