International Box Office: Wonder Woman Opens Above Century Mark with $122.5 million
June 7, 2017
Wonder Woman opened in first place on the international chart with $122.5 million in 55 markets for a global opening weekend of $225.8 million. Unsurprisingly, the film’s biggest market was China, where it opened in first place with $38.96 million. This is about $10 million less than Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 opened with recently, but then again, that was a sequel, so it is not an entirely fair comparison. Should Wonder Woman have better legs there, then it could still hit $100 million in that market. Other big markets for the movie include South Korea, where it earned $6.40 million on 1,034 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $8.41 million. This is better than Suicide Squad managed in that market, but behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Brazil and Mexico were close behind with $8.3 million and $8.22 million respectively. This is better than Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, but not as good as BvS or Suicide Squad. On the other hand, the film struggled somewhat in the U.K earning $8.00 million in 599 screens, which was still enough for first place. It only managed second place in Russia with $3.99 million on 1,194 screens. Overall, the studio should be happy with these results and I bet there’s a sequel already in early stages of development.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales fell to second place with $73.8 million in 54 markets over the weekend for totals of $386.6 million internationally and $501.7 million worldwide. If you look at the breakdown of where it has earned that money, taking into account the average studio’s share, then it is possibly that Disney’s already recouped enough to pay for the film’s entire $230 million production budget. It should break even during its initial push into the home market, but it won’t make enough to justify another installment in the franchise, unless they can cut the production budget.
Baywatch entered the top five for the first time earning third place with $23.8 million in 31 markets for an early international total of $25.5 million. The film opened in second place in the U.K. with $6.00 million in 506 theaters over the weekend. This is actually better than its opening here, given the relative size of the two market. Likewise, it earned second place in Australia with $2.59 million on 403 screens and again this is better than it performed here, given the relative size of the two markets. If it can continue to do well internationally, then it might break even sometime during its home market run.
There was a huge gap between three and four with Dangal earning $9.33 million in China for totals of $169.59 million in that market, $241.3 million internationally, and $253.7 million worldwide. Films rarely have long legs in China, but this film is proving the exception.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 rounded out the top five again with $4.4 million in 50 markets for totals of $461.1 million internationally and $816.7 million worldwide. The film has a shot at $850 million worldwide. That said, even if it doesn’t get there, it will make enough worldwide to cover its combined production and advertising budgets.
