International Box Office: Dangal Dominates China in Groundbreaking Run
May 25, 2017
Dangal became the first Indian film to have its biggest single market not be India. It earned first place in China with $34.22 million over the weekend for totals of $113.55 million in China, $185.6 million internationally, and $198.0 million worldwide. It will shortly become the second Indian film to earn more than $200 million worldwide.
Alien: Covenant remained in second place with $30.3 million in 76 markets for totals of $81.8 million internationally and $118.0 million worldwide. Its biggest new market was Russia where it made $4.51 million on 1,241 screens during its first place debut. The film also debuted in Germany, but only managed $2.2 million. Both of these results are well behind Prometheus’ results in those two markets. I think the franchise will be put on hold.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 fell to third place with $28.0 million in 57 markets for totals of $430.8 million internationally and $732.2 million worldwide. By this time next weekend, the film will have overtaken the original Guardians of the Galaxy domestically, internationally, and worldwide. The film’s biggest market was China, where it added $7.81 million over the weekend to its running tally, which now sits at $95.01 million after three weeks of release.
King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword was in fourth place with $27.7 million in 64 markets for totals of $66.2 million internationally and $93.7 million worldwide. This weekend, it debuted in first place in the U.K. with $3.24 million in 564 screens during its opening weekend. This is a little better than its opening here, compared to the relative size of the two markets. However, the film cost $175 million to make, so this is a complete disaster compared to the production budget.
Get Out entered the top five for the first time during its run with $13.6 million on 4,169 screens in 46 markets for totals of $54.63 million internationally and $229.57 million worldwide. This includes a first place opening in South Korea, where it earned $6.09 million on 945 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $7.46 million. This is the biggest opening for an foreign horror movie in that market, breaking the previous record held by Split, which was also released by Universal this year.
Normally we only talk about the top five, but there are a couple of other important films to talk about, so we will just keep going down the list.
Life just missed the top five with $13.44 million on 12,353 screens in 19 markets for totals of $63.58 million internationally and $93.76 million worldwide. This includes a second place opening in China with $13.04 million in 12,000 screens for a total opening of $13.17 million.
Up next is The Fate Of The Furious with $7.8 million on 7,178 screens in 67 markets for totals of $994.15 million and $1.214 billion worldwide. By this time next week, it will be just the sixth film to reach $1 billion internationally.
Meanwhile, Beauty And The Beast was next with $5.2 million in 26 markets over the weekend for totals of $724.0 million internationally and $1.222 billion worldwide. The film remained in first place in Japan for the fifth weekend in a row with $4.0 million giving it a total of $79.9 million after a month of release.
