Theater Averages: Manchester is Something to Sea, Earns $64,125

Manchester by the Sea led the way on the theater average chart with an average of $64,125 in four theaters. That isn’t the best average we’ve seen this year, but it is fourth place for a 2016 release. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them earned first place on the overall chart and second place with $17,954 on this chart. Nocturnal Animals earned an average of $13,315 in 37 theaters. That’s an impressive average considering how wide it was playing. Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened earned an average of $11,745 in two theaters. Meanwhile, the re-release of Daughters of the Dust was the final film in the $10,000 club earning $10,842 in its lone theater.

None of the rest of the new limited releases did particularly well. In fact, only two of them avoided the Mendoza Line ($2,000 per theater). I Am Not Madam Bovary earned an average of $4,778 in 38 theaters, which is good for its theater count. Until Forever was also playing in more theaters than most limited releases open in, 12 to be more precise, but it performed significantly worse with an average of just $2,224. Blood on the Mountain opened with an average of $1,592 in two theaters, while A Street Cat Named Bob was close behind with an average of $1,403 in 25. Magnus earned $1,204 in its lone theater. The Take and Officer Downe were both playing on Video on Demand, which explains their low averages of $415 and $235 respectively.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

• Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk reached $1 million over the weekend, but considering it was playing in more than 1,000 theaters, this is not a reason to celebrate.
• It took more than a month, but Certain Women finally got to $1 million. It picked up a couple of Independent Spirit Awards nominations, so there’s more for it to celebrate.
• Loving also hit the $1 million mark, but since it still has room to grow and already has some Awards Season success, it should hit plenty of milestones in its future.
• We don’t have the weekend numbers for Desierto, if there are any, but we know it hit $2 million on Friday.
• Moonlight topped $5 million since this time last week and thanks to its Independent Spirit Awards success, it will get to $10 million. In fact, if its Oscar buzz grows, it could reach $15 million or beyond.
