Theater Averages: Darkness has a Lovely Start with an Average of $18,585

A Tale of Love and Darkness

Natalie Portman’s feature-length directorial debut, A Tale of Love and Darkness, was the only film in the $10,000 club earning an average of $18,585 in two theaters.

The rest of the new limited releases had a wide range of results starting with Morris from America earning an average of $7,837 in two theaters. This is especially good, as the film was playing in VOD as well. Spa Night was close behind with $7,056 in its lone theater. Ixcanul was next with $5,980, also in one theater. The People vs Fritz Bauer was right behind with an average of $5,630 in six theaters. Final Fantasy XV: Kingsglaive didn’t bomb earning an average of $4,992 in 24 theaters.

There was a huge drop between those films and Lo And Behold, Reveries Of The Connected World, which only managed an average of $2,930 in 39 theaters. When Two Worlds Collide was close behind with $2,548 in one theater over the weekend and $4,262 from Wednesday through Sunday. Never barely avoided the Mendoza Line with an average of $2,156 in two theaters, while Happy Bhaag Jayegi wasn’t as lucky with an average of $2,050 in 78.

If we go further down the list, we find A Small Good Thing well back with an average of $598 in two theaters. The Student and Mr. Henri earned $486 in one theater. Finally we get to Down By Love, which earned an average of $195 in two theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Mohenjo Daro got to $1 million very early in the weekend, but it won’t last in theaters long enough to get to $2 million.
  • Anthropoid topped $2 million over the weekend, but its theater average is low enough that it will likely lose a lot of theaters this weekend.
  • Indignation is off its weekend peak, but it still managed to hit $2 million over the weekend. It will start losing theaters, but even so, $3 million is very likely.
  • Hell or High Water expanded dramatically and that let it reach the 1 million, $2 million, and $3 million milestones over the weekend.
  • Hunt for the Wilderpeople reached $4 million just before the weekend. It might get to $5 million before it is done.
