Thursday Night Previews: Neighbors 2 Rises
May 20, 2016
Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising led the way during Thursday night previews pulling in $1.67 million in 2,627 theaters last night. This is a third less than Neighbors earned, while the its internal multiplier will also be smaller, due to weaker reviews and the Sequel Effect. That said, it is still aiming at $30 million over the weekend, which is very likely more than it cost to make.
The Angry Birds Movie was well back with $800,000 in 2,804 theaters. Then again, it is a family film and these rarely do amazing business during previews. For example, Zootopia earned $1.7 million during its previews, compared to $1.8 million for 10 Cloverfield Lane. However, during its entire run, Zootopia will earn nearly five times as much as 10 Cloverfield Lane did. So while $800,000 isn't bad, it isn't great either and it makes hitting $40 million over the weekend unlikely. It will still get to $100 million domestically, but unless it is a huge hit internationally, I wouldn't expect a sequel. I also expect the people backing The Emoji Movie to get a little nervous, while the people backing a Tetris trilogy may have serious second thoughts.
The Nice Guys was very close behind with $700,000. This is a little bit better than expected, so $15 million or more should be a solid goal for its opening weekend.
