Home Market Releases for May 10th, 2016

It is officially the summer blockbuster season, which is historically the worst time of year for the home market. We are usually flooded with duds from January and February. However, this year we have the biggest hit of the year so far, Deadpool, which is coming out on DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, and 4K. Unless your eyesight is better than 20/20, 4k is not worth the upgrade, but the Blu-ray is the Pick of the Week. It isn't the only contender for that title. Mustang (DVD or Blu-ray) and The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (Blu-ray) are also must haves.

I can't believe this franchise is still going.
I previously reviewed and hated it. I got offers to review seasons two and three and said no. It is not worth my time to watch it for free.
There are four movies in this franchise, but this box set only has three of them. I guess they are disowning Legacy.

Deadpool was finally released from development hell earlier this year. It was a massive hit, but did it deserve this? Or was it just hype. Check out our review for my opinion.
This Anime series is in the top ten best-selling new releases, at least according to Amazon.com. That's a sign that it is a shallow week.
I've previously reviewed this show and I did enjoy it. The six-season box set is about half as much as buying the individual split-season releases, so that's a good bargain. It isn't worth the double-dip, on the other hand.
Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame star in this film as two people on the lower rungs of Hollywood. He's a washed up screenwriter and she's a struggling actress. Despite his anger management issues, they begin a relationship. However, he's a suspect in a murder and with his anger issues, she begins to suspect he did it. This is not one of Humphrey Bogart's most well-known movies, but it is arguably one of his best. Additionally, it is a Criterion Collection release, so the extras are excellent. Definitely worth picking up and a Pick of the Week contender.

SyFy is slowly rehabilitating its reputation with a few new shows that earned good reviews and did relatively well in the ratings. Unfortunately, while the show is great, the Blu-ray is $45 for only ten episodes. The price-per-minute is just too high.
This franchise has been around for nearly 30 years; however, it's been relegated to the Direct-to-Video market for nearly as long. Because of that, most critics ignore the films. I think a lot of people who watched the first films as kids are now grown up with kids the right age, so this could hit the nostalgia spot for the adults and entertain the kids as well.
The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
I was hoping to get a copy of this movie to review, but that is very unlikely at this point. I tend to put in requests for Kino products every month, but only get something to review roughly once a year. The film is excellent and the Blu-ray features an audio commentary track and two interview featurettes. Absolutely worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.
Mustang - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign-language Film. Personally, I thought it was the best, but it didn't win. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be any extras, so it isn't the Pick of the Week. It is close.
One of the best TV shows ever made. There are still a few more seasons before season eight and one of the greatest TV finales of all time.
Good cast. Terrible movie. Moving on.
The Lego brand has really taken over the kids market. I'm not in the target demographic and I haven't seen any of these shows, so I can't comment on the quality. It is selling well, on the other hand.
I watched the first few episodes of this show, and Scream Queens, neither of which really held my attention enough to last the full season. Most critics felt the same. On the other hand, it did well enough with audiences that it earned a second season, so if you are a fan, you should be happy about that.

The film's setup involves involves a scientist who discovers time travel, but has to keep it away from his corporate backer. Unfortunately, the reviews are weak, so unless you are really interested in a sci-fi with a Film Noir feel, you can skip it.
Robert Stack won an Emmy for his portrayal of Eliot Ness in this series. It only lasted four seasons, but it had a lasting effect on the culture. The price is about half as much as all eight split-season releases. Like the other full-series set above, this is a good deal if you don't own the show already, but it isn't worth the double-dip.
Risen is the biggest VOD release, but that's not saying much.
An A&E mini-series based on the "novel" by Leo Tolstoy. (Leo Tolstoy didn't consider the book a novel, but it is hard to categorize what it is.) The reviews are excellent and there are enough extras that it is worth picking up.
The latest Michael Moore documentary has him traveling around the world to other countries and looking at how they handle the problems America is dealing with. The reviews were great, but the distributor was having issues during its release. (They didn't have a name yet.) It still did incredible business, for a documentary, but not up to Michael Moore's usual standards. There are no extras on the DVD or Blu-ray, but it is still worth picking up.

Ella Purnell stars as a teenager who runs away from home only to get lost in the Alaskan wilderness. The reviews are 100% positive thus far, but it didn't find an audience in theaters and there appears to be no extras on the DVD or Blu-ray. It is still worth picking up, but not quite a Pick of the Week contender.
I don't pay attention to wrestling, but apparently they are getting rid of the Divas and making the female wrestling championship more legitimate. Good for them.
Patty Duke passed away recently and there is a ghoulish feel to this release. However, given how long it takes to get a Blu-ray release done, you have to assume they started before her death and this is just bad timing. There's only one review on Rotten Tomatoes, but it is positive. The only extra is an interview featurette, which is a shame. Still worth picking up for fans of the genre.
