Weekend Wrap-Up: Zootopia Wins Weekend With Record-breaking Result of $75.06 million
March 8, 2016
As expected Zootopia dominated the weekend box office earning $75.06 million. This is half of what The Hunger Games opened with, but it was still the fifth Biggest March Opening. It also broke a couple of smaller records, but more on that down below. Second place went to London Has Fallen, but it was way, way back with just $21.64 million. This is terrible for a film that cost more than $100 million to make. Overall, the box office was $159 million. This is 41% more than last weekend and 77% more than the same weekend last year. 2016's lead over 2015 rose to just a hair under 10% at $1.97 billion to $1.79 billion. Granted, by this time in 2015, none of the year's $1 billion hits had been released, so things can change rapidly, but this is still a great start so far.
Zootopia opened in first place over the weekend with $75.06 million, which is nearly perfectly inline with predictions. It is also the biggest opening for an Animated film in March, just topping The Lorax. Meanwhile, it topped Frozen for biggest weekend by a non-Pixar Disney animated film. With reviews that are 99% positive, it should have long legs and a final domestic box office of more than $200 million seems like a sure thing.
London Has Fallen was in a distant second place with just $21.64 million. Compared to the average March release, this isn't bad. However, compared to its predecessor, Olympus Has Fallen, or its production budget, $105 million, it is a disaster. Add in its 26% positive reviews and it will likely have short legs. Unless it is a much bigger hit internationally, it won't break even any time soon.
Deadpool was pushed into third place with $16.73 million over the weekend for a four-week total of $311.48 million. It became just the third R-rated movie to reach that milestone, while it was the 21st fastest film of all time to get to $300 million.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is the latest political comedy to fail. It only managed fourth place with $7.44 million over the weekend. Its low theater average and its mixed reviews will lead to a short stay in theaters.
Gods of Egypt fell 63% to just $5.20 million over the weekend for a total of $23.05 million after ten days of release. It is doing better internationally, but not by enough to break even any time soon.
Eddie the Eagle held on the best out of the sophomore class down just 49% to $3.13 million over the weekend for a total of $10.89 million after two weeks of release. It likely won't get to $20 million domestically, so unless it becomes a bigger hit internationally or on the home market, it won't break even. Triple 9 fell 63% to just $2.26 million over the weekend for a ten-day total of $10.37 million. Its per theater average is barely above $1,000, so its theater count will likely take a massive hit this Friday.
