International Box Office: San Andreas Rumbles to the Top

June 4, 2015

San Andreas

San Andreas opened in first place on the international chart with $63.9 million on 15,420 screens in 60 markets. Its best international market was Mexico where it earned first place with $9.97 million. It also opened in first place in Australia with $2.47 million in 449 theaters. The film generated $7.07 million in 505 theaters in the U.K. and $5.16 million on 2,256 screens in Russia. The film was also potent in Brazil with an opening of $3.2 million in 926 theaters, while it earned a nearly identical amount in France with $3.19 million in 496. It is still too soon to tell where the film will end up, but it made more worldwide than it cost to make during its opening weekend, so the studio must be happy.

Stand by me Doraemon started its run in first place in China with $38.29 million during its four-day opening.

Tomorrowland remained in third place with $29.3 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $70.0 million. This includes a third place, $14.11 million, opening in six days in China. This already makes China the biggest single international market for the film. The second biggest market of the weekend was the U.K. where it earned fourth place with $1.60 million in 541 theaters over the weekend for a total of $6.27 million after two weeks of release. It only earned $1.36 million on 1,990 screens in Russia for a two-week total of $6.57 million.

Mad Max: Fury Road fell to fourth place with $21.6 million on 10,220 screens in 70 markets for totals of $165.0 million international and $281.5 million worldwide. This could be enough to cover the film's production budget; if not, it is very likely very close. The film's biggest market of the weekend was South Korea where it remained in first place for the third weekend in a row. It added $4.50 million in 669 theaters to push its running tally to $23.05 million.

After a month on top, The Avengers: Age of Ultron fell to fifth place with $17.6 million over the weekend for a total of $894.2 million internationally and $1.322 billion worldwide. The film is fading fast in China with $17.03 million for the full week and $226.79 million after three weeks of release. The film will reach $900 million internationally in short order, while $1 billion isn't out of reach, if it is a big hit in Japan. The original made $45 million in that market, so I'm not overly optimistic.

Pitch Perfect 2 slipped to sixth place with $10.1 million in 46 markets for a four-week total of $80.7 million internationally. The film's biggest market was South Korea, where it earned ninth place with $311,000 on 297 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $402,000. This is not good, but it is still miles ahead of its predecessor's run in that market. It did better in Italy with $319,000 in 261 theaters over the weekend for a total opening of $402,000, earning fifth place in the process. This was twice what the first film opened with in that market.

Spy! was right behind with $8.9 million on 1,633 screens in 10 markets for a two-week total of $27.8 million. It remained in second place in South Korea with $3.39 million in 601 theaters for a total of $11.14 million. That's a better hold than expected. Likewise, the film was down just 34% in Australia to $1.87 million in 369 theaters over the weekend for a two-week total of $5.53 million. If these holds are any indication, the film's chances of crossing $100 million domestically have improved.

Poltergeist fell to eighth place with $6.7 million on 3,859 screens in 47 markets for a two-week total of $18.4 million. The only major market opening of the week was Germany, where the film earn second place with $1.50 million on 322 screens.
