Blu-ray Sales: Hunger Games Fills Up on Blu-ray
March 22, 2015
Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 led the new releases earning first place on the Blu-ray Sales Chart. It wasn't quite as strong as last week's winner, Big Hero 6; however, it did sell better than Catching Fire did. The Blu-ray sold 1.39 million units / $27.92 million, which is even more impressive when you note it was on sale for only two days, not the usual five days for a new release. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 66%, which is great no matter what its genre was.
Big Hero 6 fell 90% to 187,000 units / $3.66 million over the week for totals of 2.13 million units / $40.39 million. I think this confirms it is a Fanboy family film. Tinker Bell and the Legend of the Neverbeast opened in third place with 178,000 units / $4.15 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 46%. This is excellent for a direct-to-DVD release. However, it is lower than previous installments in the franchise, so it is not a shock that the franchise has come to an end. Outlander: Season One, Part One opened in fourth place with 36,000 units / $1.39 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 25%, which is roughly inline with other TV on DVD releases. Foxcatcher rounded out the top five with 25,000 units / $503,000 for the week giving it an opening week Blu-ray share of 43%. Its opening week sales were great for a limited release, but its Awards Season buzz suggests it could have performed better.
The only other new release to chart was Barbie in Princess Power, which landed in 14th place with 11,000 units / $221,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just 14%, but given its target audience, this lower figure is not surprising in the least.
