Theater Averages: It Follows in Shadows’ Footsteps

It Follows was one of five new releases to reach the $10,000 club, based on theater averages this weekend. It opened with an average of $40,022 in four theaters, which is the second-best for a film opening in 2015, just behind What We Do in the Shadows. The overall box office leader, Cinderella, was well back in second place with an average of $17,653. Seymour: An Introduction opened with an average of $13,294 in two theaters. 3 Hearts earned $11,794 in its lone theater. Tales of Hoffmann was right behind with an average of $11,670 in two theaters.

We only have numbers for two other new limited releases. (Studios tend to not release box office number for films that open in Video on Demand, especially if those numbers are terrible.) The Wrecking Crew did well with an average of $8,123 in seven theaters. This is excellent for a documentary. Eva, on the other hand, only managed an average of $208 in 50 theaters. Granted, it was playing in too many theaters and its reviews were mixed, but this is still a really poor start.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

• What We Do in the Shadows reached to $1 million just before the weekend. It likely won't expand significantly beyond this point, but it could still get to $2 million before too long.
• As expected, A La Mala topped $3 million over the weekend. Depending on how well it hold onto its theater count, this is likely as far as it will go.
• Still Alice reached $15 million since this time last week. It probably won't last long enough to get to $20 million, but I wouldn't completely dismiss the possibility.
