International Box Office: Shades Completes the Threepeat
March 5, 2015
For the third weekend in a row, Fifty Shades of Grey ruled the international box office, this time pulling in $36 million in 59 markets over the weekend for totals of $337.00 million internationally and $484.40 million worldwide. It will reached $500 million early this weekend [ Copy Ed: Just heard it crossed $500 million today with $352 million internationally and $150 million domestically for a worldwide total of $502 million]. The film opened in South Korea, but struggled earning fourth place with $1.25 million on 510 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.80 million. It might have struggled in South Korea, because by the time it opened there, the word-of-mouth has overtaken the hype. Its biggest single market is the U.K. where it has made $46.27 million, including $3.43 million on 545 screens this past weekend.
Kingsman: The Secret Service remained in second place with $26 million in 71 markets over the weekend for totals of $125 million internationally and $211 million worldwide after a month of release. The film rose to first place in South Korea with $4.62 million on 669 screens over the weekend for a total of $25.33 million after three weeks of release. On the other hand, it only earned $1.7 million on 1,050, which was enough for second place.
From Vegas to Macau II, a.k.a., The Man from Macau II, earned first place in China and third place internationally with $22 million over the weekend for a total of $113.71 million after two weeks of release.
Big Hero 6 was right behind with $21.6 million in 25 markets over the weekend for totals of $351.3 million internationally and $572.2 million worldwide. The film opened in China with $13.81 million, but that was only over two days.
American Sniper earned fifth place with $20.6 million on 4,570 screens in 58 markets for totals of $140.3 million internationally and $471.1 million worldwide. The film's biggest new market was Germany, where it placed second with a total opening of $3.8 million on 333 screens. Its biggest market overall was France where it remained in first place with $4.5 million on 461 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $12.4 million.
Wolf Totem rose to second place in China with $17 million over the weekend for a total of $80.09 million after two weeks of release in its native market.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water fell a couple of spots to seventh with $14.2 million on 6,947 screens in 46 markets for an international total of $96.3 million after a month of release. The film will reach a couple of major milestones this upcoming weekend. As for last weekend, the film opened in first place in Italy with $2.3 million on 360 screens.
Focus opened in eighth place with $13.9 million on 3,860 screens in 31 markets. This includes a first place, $3.66 million opening on 1,265 screens in Russia. On the other hand, it opened in third place in the U.K. with $2.91 million on 457 screens.
Dragon Blade fell to third place in China and ninth place internationally with $12.5 million over the weekend for a total of $101.58 million after two weeks of release.
The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel opened in tenth place with $9.4 million in three markets over the weekend. This includes $5.75 million on 589 screens in the U.K., which was enough for first place. This is nearly double what the first film opened with in that market. On the other hand, I really don't think it will have the same legs.
