Movie Website Updates for May 6 - May 12

May 12, 2005

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. Here the list of this week's releases, a couple of new sites and few updates, including this week's winner, Layer Cake - Official Site.

Arthur and the Minimoys
The site has an English section now, but there are two problems: the English site isn't as imaginatively done and not all sections are in English so navigating isn't that easy.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
The teaser trailer was added to the site, and while it was going for that epic feel, it doesn't get there.

Crazy Like a Fox
Simple site with all the usual features but without a lot of flash.

The Dukes of Hazzard
The trailer is online, not on the site yet. You have to surf over to Yahoo! Movies to watch the trailer. Simply puit, I'm not impressed. The film doesn't have the same appeal as the TV Show it's based on, and it's never a good idea to mess with the source material when making a movie.

Fantastic Four
Massive redesign this week and the site just keeps getting better. While the old menu system was more imaginative, this one is easier to navigate. There are also a couple of extra features: bios and a clip for each character. One other section added was the Broadband Experience, which is only for Internet Explorer uses. And since IE is basically a security hole with some browsing capability added on, I am unable review that section.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
The teaser trailer is up, which is far too much teaser and not enough trailer to judge the film. However, with the built in audience these movies have, you don't need to give away much to get people excited. On a side note, it's interesting to see shots of the three main leads from the first three movies.

Kicking and Screaming
No changes from last week, which means the TV spots and the interviews are still marked coming soon. However, it's still early in the day and they might be added latter so I'll check back just before I upload this column. ... Nope, no such luck. The two remaining sections have still not been added.

Kings and Queen
Typical Wellspring movie site.

Layer Cake
Quite a different look from the site's previous incarnation; this version has a lot more content, but much less style. There are clips in front of every section that are shown through a mesh, which isn't the best practical choice but it definitely adds points for style. The rest of the site contains the usual information, synopsis, production notes, cast bios, director bio, image gallery and trailer. Had they kept the original, stylish part of the site and just added the informative section this would have easily been this week's award winner. However, as it is it squeaks out a close win becoming the winner of the confectionery Weekly Website Award

Loggerheads
This site has all the usual features, a few extras like an audio clip from the film, but it doesn't have a very polished feel.

Lords of Dogtown
Evolution of Skateboarding was added as was another Webisode, Meet the Skactors, (skater + actor = Skactor.) The game, Streets of Dogtown was also added, fun game but I go hit by a lot of cars. A few more additions and this site will be an award winner for sure.

Mad Hot Ballroom
Nearly a dozen video clips were added to the site and includes an interview with the writer and director. Good background information for those interested in the movie.

Ma Mere
Simple site with most of the usual features and nothing in the way of flash.

Mindhunters
This site is not giving me much hope for the movie. The trailer looks ok, but nothing else helps sell the movie.

Modigliani
There appear to be no real changes in the site since it first launched.

Monster-in-Law
No changes in about a month, still a passable site but nothing too special.

Night Watch
A new game was added to the site, The Hunt, it's basically viral marketing with a bit of interactivity built in. It's too soon to tell if it will be worth checking out on a regular basis, or just a cheesy marketing campaign.

Serenity
As expected, there were more Can't Stop the Signal tickets releases, and this time it took four hours to completely sell out. This bodes well for the film's opening, but I fear the Fanboy Effect will be tremendous.

The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants
The cast & crew bios and production notes were added to the site.

Stealth
The third Caught on Video clip was added to the site. This one is the best so far.

Tell Them Who You Are
Bare even compared to most documentary sites.

Undead
The flash site launched this week and while all the usual feature are present, I was hoping for a little more style. Highlights of site include the blog and extensive reviews.

Unleashed
The movie starts tomorrow and Pit Fight, Clips and Behind-the-Scenes are still marked coming soon.

V For Vendetta
A flash intro was added to the site, but as far as I can tell that all there is on the site now.

Wedding Crashers
The Crasher Kit was added to the site and it contains instructions on how to make a balloon animal, Wedding Crasher rules, fake Purple Heart to print out and name tag generator.
