Does the Screen Actors Guild Predict Oscar Glory?
February 5, 2005
More than a dozen awards were handed tonight in Los Angeles at the Shrine Exposition Center, and with only five theatrical awards there were more than a few surprises.
The list of winners are:
Best Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
I was really expecting Annette Bening to win for her performance in Being Julia. It's shades of 2000 when Hilary Swank won for Boys Don't Cry when Annette Bening was heavily favored to win for her performance in American Beauty.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
Almost no surprise here.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
Most analysts thought this was a close two-way race between Morgan Freeman and Thomas Haden Church. And while the latter was the favorite, this isn't too much of a surprise.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
Another category with a close two-way race, however, most would have picked Virginia Madsen to take home the hardware.
And while it's not a theatrical award, I did want to note that the late Jerry Orbach won for Best Lead Actor in a Drama series. This was the eighth time in nine years he was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award, but the first time he was a winner.
