International Top Five - Prada Passes Milestone
October 26, 2006
It was a $100 million weekend for The Devil Wears Prada as its $18.6 million haul lifted its international total to $104 million.
The film's only opening of note was Sweden where it topped the charts with $606,000 on 66 screens.
Most of the film's box office this weekend came from holdovers like Italy where it was down a tiny 7% to $3.33 million on 420 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.50 million while it held on nearly as strong in Germany down 21% to $3.36 million on 598 million for a two week total of $9.23 million.
The film still has openings in South Korea and Japan, although I'm unconvinced the film will be a hit in either country.
But the film has already earned twice what it needed to show a profit, so the studio has no reason to complain regardless of what happens from now on.
Open Season climbed the charts, hitting second place with $7.7 million on 2,815 screens in 25 markets for a total of $23.7 million so far.
This growth was mostly the result of the film's first place debut in France with $2.2 million on 644 screens while it also placed first in Switzerland ($145,000 on 23 screens), and Malaysia ($140,000 on 37).
It also remained strong in Mexico where it remained in first place with $1.44 million on 614 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $4.51 million.
World Trade Center added $6.9 million on 3,200 screens in 50 markets for an international total of $69.9 million, which is just a shade below what it made domestically.
The film's biggest opening of the weekend came from Hong Kong where it finished first with $353,000 on 24 screens.
However, it also did well in Japan with $1.59 million on 320 screens for a three-week total of $12.59 million and in Italy with $1.56 million on 333 screens for a total of $4.31 million.
In both markets the film placed second.
The Guardian climbed into fourth place with $5.2 million on 3,100 screens in 15 markets for an early international total of $9.5 million.
The film's biggest opening was Mexico with $836,000 on 400 screens over the weekend, which was enough for second place. Meanwhile, it fell 53% in Spain to $499,000 on 402 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $2.41 million.
The final film in the top five was The Departed with $5.1 million on 1,200 screens in 13 markets for a total of $25.3 million internationally and $102 million worldwide.
The film had no new openings this weekend, but remained in top spot in the U.K. with $2.74 million on 358 screens over the weekend for a three-week total of $15.33 million.
It also repeated as champ of the Australian box office with $1.36 million on 276 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.92 million after two.
