International Details - Eight Remains just Below Top Five
May 14, 2006
With Mission: Impossible 3 dominating the international charts, most films saw a serious drop-off and those that didn't were able to climb the charts, or at least remain stable. For instance, Eight Below fell 27% to $3.67 million on 1951 screens in 27 markets, but despite there being two new releases in the top five, it was able to remain in sixth place on the overall charts. The film was not able to crack $1 million in any single market, but did perform well in Spain with $587,000 on 225 screens and that lifted its total box office to $2.15 million in the market, $30.35 million internationally, and $111.42 million worldwide.
- Barefoot Ki-bong grew by 14% during its second weekend in South Korea adding $3.22 million on 312 screens to its box office of $9.16 million after just two weeks of release.
- Detective Conan: Requiem Of The Detectives dipped by a mere 2% this week in Japan earning $2.76 million on 284 screens for a four week total of $22.51 million.
- The Inside Man fell out of the top five this week down 55% to $2.73 million on 1748 screens in 33 markets for an international total of $80.66 million. The film is already a huge financial success, so the large drop-off is immaterial at this point.
- Silent Hill opened in Hong Kong over the weekend but had a disappointing fourth place opening earning only $118,000 on 29 screens, and that was for the whole week. That result plus a series of large drop-offs left the film in 10th place with $2.54 million on 915 screens in 9 markets for an international total of $12.77 million. Next weekend it could reclaim a spot in the top five as it opens Germany, Russia and other major markets.
- A lack of new openings sent The Wild tumbling out of the top five with $2.38 million on 1961 screens in 31 markets for an international total of $28.70 million. The film's best market was Russia where it remained in second place despite falling 55% to $499,000 on 240 screens for a two-week total of $2.03 million.
- Bloody Tie fell from first to third in South Korea adding $2.35 million on 308 screens to its two-week total of $9.92 million.
- Coincidentally, Quatre Etoiles opened in fourth place in France over the weekend; at least I think it's a coincidence. Quatre means four in French, right? Regardless, Quatre Etoiles opened in fourth place in France with $2.32 million on 280 screens while it finished 15th in Switzerland with $29,000 on 5 screens. Overall the film placed 13th with $2.35 million on 285 screens, which is a reasonable start.
- V for Vendetta is coasting on holdovers, which explains why it fell out of the top ten with $2.15 million on 1619 screens in 46 markets for a total of $55.83 million international. It's best market continues to be Japan where it added $862,000 on 245 screens during its third weekend of release for a $6.83 million total.
- The French film, OSS 117: Le Caire Nid D'Espions, slipped farther down the charts with $2.01 million on 584 screens in four markets for a total of $13.25 million after three weeks of release.
- No major or even midlevel openings left Take the Lead falling down the charts this week. Overall the film made $1.92 million on 969 screens in 9 markets for a total of $11.61 million so far. Its best market of the weekend was Italy where it remained in third place adding $972,000 on 339 screens for a two-week total of $4.05 million.
- Japan was one of the few markets where Mission: Impossible 3 didn't open and that helped a lot of films playing there climb the charts. This include Chekeraccho!, a.k.a. Check It Out, Yo!, which climbed to 17th place with $1.36 million on 207 screens over the weekend for a three-week total of $6.91 million.
- Another Japanese film, Crayon Shin-chan Vol. 14, climbed one spot to 18th with $1.32 million on 262 screens for a four-week total of $11.75 million.
- 16 Blocks was one of several films to not have any openings of note last weekend, but this film suffered more than most as it collapsed by 61%. A typical result came in the U.K. where it fell 60% to $577,000 on 302 screens over the weekend and $3.04 million in total. Overall the film made $1.26 million on 1273 screens in 14 markets for a disappointing international total of just $16.63 million so far.
- The British film, Confetti, opened in second place in its native market with $1.18 million on 300 screens. The opening for this Reality TV mockumentary is good, but not great, and the real test is will it have long legs and can it translate into other markets. If the answer is yes to both of those, then it might earn a theatrical release here.
- Una Pelicula De Huevos fell to second place in its native Mexico down 57% to $1.16 million on 393 screens over the weekend and $9.58 million in total.
- The surest sign that this is not a usual week on the international charts is Final Destination 3's ranking. Just last week the film's would have missed the top 30, but this week its $1.01 million on 807 screens in 16 markets is strong enough to 22nd place. Its best market of the week was Australia where the film finished in fourth place with $333,000 on 147 screens and that lifted its total in the market to $1.34 million and its international total to $53.96 million.
- Asterix and the Vikings added another $966,000 on 646 screens in 5 markets to its $11.41 million total.
- Failure to Launch saw its weekend haul sliced in half, again, falling to 24th place with $912,000 on 732 screens in 27 markets for a total of $33.42 million. The film still has a couple of markets left to open in, but it won't push its international total too much higher.
- Over The Border opened in South Korea but really struggled with just $858,000 on 282 screens over the weekend and $1.02 million in total. That was only strong enough for fifth in the market, but enough for 25th overall.
- Hostel had the worst week-to-week performance on the charts plummeting from 16th to 26th place. It fell 61% to $853,000 on 542 screens in 25 markets for a $32.44 million total, which is more than enough to show a profit given its tiny production budget.
- Narnia fell off the charts a couple of weeks ago, but because it is playing in Japan and that's practically the only major market where Mission: Impossible 3 didn't open, it was able to reclaim a spot in the top 30. The film finished in 27th place overall with $742,000 on 524 screens in 2 markets for an international total of $450.79 million and a worldwide total of $742.50 million. The film is now 17th place internationally and 21st place worldwide, but while it might climb a space or two internationally, it won't be able to make the top 20 worldwide.
- Considering how poorly Basic Instinct 2 has held up in the past few weeks, I'm surprised it managed to remain in the top 30 this week. But that's exactly what it did do with $659,000 on 898 screens in 19 markets for a total of $32.66 million.
- La Doublure lost half of last weekend's total but with $643,000 on 347 screens in 3 markets, it was still able to find a place on this week's charts. So far the film has made $24.75 million internationally, $21.11 million of that coming from France.
- Ahead of this week's debut in the U.K., Prime reentered the charts with $587,000 on 277 screens in 8 markets for a total of $37.62 million.
- Yours, Mine and Ours added $500,000 on 826 screens in 26 markets for an international total of $15.36 million so far.
- The French-language Canadian film, C.R.A.Z.Y. opened in semi-limited releases in France but just missed the top ten. It did earn $647,000 on 88 screens but that was for the full week.
- Slither plummeted 67% during its second weekend in the U.K. adding $302,000 on 288 screens to its total of $1.83 million in that market and $2.5 million internationally. This is not as bad of a decline as it first appears as half the films in the top ten saw declines that were greater than 60%.
- There was no box office data for the weekend, but the studio announced that Nanny McPhee's international total has reached $73 million.
- The same is true for When a Stranger Calls except its total is just $7 million internationally.
