International Top Five - Ice Age Cracks Half a Billion

April 26, 2006

Ice Age: The Meltdown continues its international run adding another $40.23 million on 9034 screens in 60 markets to its total of $333.06 million on the international scene and $501.41 million worldwide. The film in now 43rd on the All-Time Charts and is climbing the charts very quickly. It had a trio of openings in major markets taking first in Italy with $5.25 million on 538 screens but had to settle for second in South Korea with $1.41 million on 234 screens over the weekend and $1.55 million in total. In Japan the film was even weaker finishing in fourth place with $1.28 million on 465 screens, which is well below the $5000 per theatre average that separates the hits from the missing, so even with Golden Week holidays, Ice Age: The Meltdown won't have much legs in the market. Its best market overall was Germany where the film remained first despite a post-East drop-off of 57% falling to $5.35 million on 1109 screens for a total of $48.60 million after three weeks there.

Scary Movie 4 nearly doubled its weekend haul with $17.53 million on 2879 screens in 22 markets for a total of $30.04 million so far. Of the more than a dozen new openings this weekend Germany was the best but it still had to settle for second place with $4.59 million on 635 screens. The film also managed second in Italy, (3.43 million on 403 screens) and Mexico, ($1.59 million on 400 screens). Scary Movie 4 fell 43% during its second weekend in the U.K. earning $1.66 million on 381 screens for a $7.51 million in total. On the other hand, it fell 55% in Russia to $887,000 on 250 screens for a $3.71 million in total.

The Inside Man slip to third with $7.69 million on 2572 screens in 43 markets for a total of $64.74 million after a month of release. The film's only major opening was in South Korea where it opened in third place with $854,000 on 115 screens over the weekend and $1.00 million in total. Its best market of the weekend was France where it added $1.5 million at 338 screens for a two-week total of $4.8 million there while it also topped $1 million in Spain with $1.13 million on 256 screens over the weekend and $3.88 million in total. The film has a few more markets left to open in and it closing in on $150 million worldwide and should reach that figure by this time next week.

V for Vendetta opened in several markets this weekend but only two of them were of note. In France it opened in third place with $1.77 million on 336 screens while in Japan it also managed third with $1.30 million on 243 screens. Overall the film made $5.75 million on 2069 screens in 48 markets for an international total of $38.79 million. Quite frankly, I was expecting a lot more from the film on the international scene, even after it struggled domestically.

The final film in the top five was OSS 117: Le Caire Nid D'Espions, the secret agent film from France made its international debut with $5.34 million on 601 screens in three markets. The film earned $5.11 million of that on 557 screens in France while adding $142,000 on 30 screens in Belgium and $92,000 on 14 screens in Switzerland.
