International Details - Harry Potter has 900 Million Reasons to Celebrate
September 9, 2007
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix may have fallen out of the top five, but it was able to cross $900 million worldwide since last week making it only the tenth film to do so. Over the weekend the film added $7.08 million on 4486 screens in 53 markets for a total of $626.30 million internationally, which places the film sixth place on that chart just $16 million behind Dead Man's Chest. There's not much to report for individual markets with the film down 43% during its second weekend in Greece adding $612,000 on 129 screens for a total of $2.91 million. Its best market remains Japan at $1.67 million on 605 screens over the weekend for a total of $75.18 million after seven weeks. Meanwhile, the film continues to march towards $100 million in the U.K. and after earning $796,000 on 306 screens over the weekend it now sits at $97.89 million in total.
- Knocked Up slipped a spot to seventh down 12% to $6.05 million on 1581 screens in 19 markets for a total of $37.21 million. This is even more impressive as the film had no major, or even midlevel openings this week. In Germany the film remained in first place down 11% to $1.88 million on 598 screens while in the U.K. the film added $2.88 million on 424 screens as it was solid in second place. The film now has $4.96 million and $9.96 million in those two markets respectively, which compares very well to the final box office The 40-Year Old Virgin earned, ($7.50 million and $13.53 million respectively). The film has yet to open in a number of major markets, (France, Italy, Spain, etc.), and should top the international total of The 40-Year Old Virgin while hitting $200 million worldwide along the way.
- Disturbia climbed into the top ten thanks to openings in South Korea and Brazil. In the former market the film placed first with $1.58 million on 205 screens over the weekend and $1.81 million in total while in the latter market it scored $322,000 on 140 screens over the weekend and $344,000 in total placing fourth. Meanwhile in France, it added $845,000 this weekend on 219 screens for a total of $2.55 million after two. Overall the film managed $4.06 million on 1027 screens in 19 markets for a total of $20.42 million.
- No Reservations also climbed into the top ten with $3.87 million on 1317 screens in 22 markets for a total of $12.76 million internationally. The film opened in both the U.K. and South Korea, but strangely earned more in the latter than the former. In South Korea it placed fourth with $993,000 on 165 screens over the weekend and $1.19 million in total while in the U.K. it managed just $822,000 on 347 screens over the weekend and $1.03 million in total.
- The Transformers grabbed the final spot in the top ten with $3.69 million on 2780 screens in 47 markets for a total of $367.10 million internationally. The film is coasting on holdovers at the moment, but should hit $700 million worldwide, especially after it hits IMAX screens later this month.
- Evan Almighty added $3.46 million on 2258 screens in 35 markets for a total of $47.73 million. The film still has a couple major markets left to go, but its chances of catching its domestic total are slim and getting worse.
- Heyy Babyy was down just 27% to $3.10 million on 744 screens in 17 markets for a $10.64 million total. For an Indian film, this is close to blockbuster status.
- License To Wed opened in fifth place in Germany with $690,000 on 328 screens. That did help the film climb a few spots to 13th this weekend with $2.93 million on 1525 screens in 22 markets, but its total of $18.37 million is disappointing so far.
- 1408 returned to the charts with $2.91 million on 576 screens in 13 markets for a total of $10.98 million so far. Almost all of that came from the film's third place, $2.17 million opening on 406 screens in the U.K. which is inline with expectations. The film still has plenty of major markets left to open in, so it is perilous to judge its final box office this soon.
- Hairspray climbed a couple more spots to 15th thanks to a second place opening in the Netherlands where it earned $400,000 on 70 screens over the weekend and $478,000 in total. It also held well in France adding $1.01 million on 320 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.85 million. Overall the film now has $32.71 million, including the $2.57 million on 1126 screens in earned in 23 markets this past weekend.
- Surf's Up added $2.47 million on 1792 screens in 33 markets for a total of $37.04 million.
- Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone opened in first place in Japan with $2.42 million on just 84 screens, which is an amazing performance there.
- Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer fell to 18th place with $2.13 million on 1759 screens in 12 markets for a total of $145.22 million.
- Placing 19th was War, but not that War, which made $1.83 million on 464 screens in 4 markets over the weekend for a total of $2.13 million. The only opening of note was in Russia, its native market, where it earned $1.21 million on 285 screens over the weekend.
- Life: Tears in Heaven climbed to second place in Japan and 20th place overall with $1.76 million on 289 screens over the weekend and $5.78 million in total.
- Ocean's Thirteen is coasting on holdovers added $1.60 million on 602 screens in 19 markets for a total of $188.31 million.
- I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry returned to the charts in 22nd place with $1.60 million on 601 screens in 7 markets for a total of $9.36 million. The film opened in France but bombed badly earning just $249,000 on 149 screens. In fact, it earned almost as much in neighboring Belgium with $229,000 on 35 screens, (including midweek numbers).
- The Last Legion rose to 23rd place with $1.59 million on 543 screens in 6 markets for a total of $8.53 million. This includes a ninth place, $355,000 opening on 164 screens in Germany, but most of it came from Spain where it added $999,000 on 298 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $3.54 million.
- Mr. Brooks returned to the charts thanks to a fourth place, $1.19 million opening on 210 screens in France. Overall the film tool in $1.57 million on 470 screens in 10 markets for a still early $7.70 million international total.
- Kein Bund Fars Leben - Sie Kommen Deutschland zu Retten!, which means... huh.. I took year of high school German, I should know this. ... Kein. Looks like Kevin. Kevin Bund is a name. Kevin Bund for Life - The Common Germany is Rotten! And if I'm wrong, I'm sure someone can correct me. Kein Bund Fars Leben opened in its native market with $1.57 million on 301 screens and that was enough for second place in Germany and 25th overall.
- The South Korean film, The Worst Guy Ever, opened in its native market with $1.53 million on 279 screens over the weekend and $1.78 million in total. This was enough for second in the market and 26th overall.
- May 18 fell from 10th place with 27th with $1.39 million on 253 screens over the weekend and $48.09 million in total. A 65% drop-off may seem extreme, but it is common in South Korea.
- Grindhouse returned to the charts this week with $1.36 million for a total of $29.04 million, which is ahead of what it made domestically. This weekend, Death Proof added $1.19 million on 651 screens in 10 markets for a total of $23.27 million, including $803,000 on 265 during its fifth place debut in Spain.
- 3 Amis slipped to third place in France with $1.27 million on 467 screens lifting its total to $3.92 million.
- 28 Weeks Later returned to the chart, barely, with $1.21 million on 422 screens in 10 markets for a total of $27.86 million. This was mostly due to the film's fourth place, $921,000 opening on 302 screens in Germany.
That's it for the top 30, but Death Sentence did start its international run with a tenth place, $526,000 opening on 288 screens in the U.K. That's even weaker than its debut here, which doesn't bode well for the film's chances.
