August 22, 2007

The Simpsons Movie topped the charts for the fourth weekend in a row, the first film do win four weeks in a row on the international chart this summer. However, it was very, very close with $22.30 million on 3128 screens in 49 market for a total of $267.62 million internationally while its worldwide total is now $432.89 million. The film opened in first place in Russia with $3.66 million on 545 screens while in Brazil it took in $2.73 million on 442 screens. Its final significant opening of the weekend came in the Netherlands where it also took first place with $844,000 on 190 screens including the biggest opening day for an animated film at just under $222,000. The film is already $100 million ahead of its domestic pace on the international scene and should hit $300 million before long, while worldwide it could be headed to $500 million.

The Bourne Ultimatum shot up to second place and nearly squeaked out a win with $22.24 million on 1394 screens in 19 markets for a two-week total of $28.07 million. Its biggest opening came in the U.K. where it took in $13.02 million, which is just over the $12.36 million The Bourne Identity made during its entire run in that market. Meanwhile in Spain the film pulled in $2.62 million on 394 screens over the weekend and $5.10 million in total, which was comparable to the previous installments' totals as well. Speaking of the previous installments, neither of those films were able to crack $100 million internationally, a feat The Bourne Ultimatum should have little trouble accomplishing; in fact, it could earn more than the previous two installments earned, combined.

Ratatouille remained in third place thanks to a soft 11% drop-off as it earned $16.69 million on 2924 screens in 30 markets for a total of $149.42 million. Openings this week include all smaller markets with Portugal being the biggest at $998,000 on 80 screens while it made $346,000 on 52 screens in Malaysia. The bulk of its weekend box office came from holdings, most notably France where the film added $7.91 million on 723 screens for a three-week total of $36.31 million. The film is about one week away from topping The Incredibles' total of $40.31 million while it is still a little ahead of Finding Nemo's pace. The next major opening for the film comes in early September when it opens in Australia, while it won't debut in the U.K. till mid-October.

Despite falling just 35%, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix slipped from second to fourth with $15.41 million on 6491 screens in 62 markets for a total of $588.94 million. The film had no major or even midlevel openings this weekend, but did add $3.2 million on 525 screens in China for a two-week total of $13.4 million while it bounced back into first place in Japan with $2.67 million on 627 screens for a total of $66.68 million after a month. Its best market overall remained the U.K. with $91.94 million, including $1.86 million on 399 screens this past weekend. The film has been holding on a lot better than expected during its late run and that will ensure $600 million internationally and $900 million worldwide. In fact, its worldwide total of $867.70 million is less than a week from topping The Chamber of Secrets total and in the end only The Philosopher's Stone will have made more worldwide.

Rush Hour 3 climbed into the top five with $11.36 million on 1744 screens in 17 markets for a two-week total of $26.82 million. The film opened in first place in Germany with $3.96 million on 604 screens, which is about 20% lower than Rush Hour 2's opened with back in 2002, and that's before taking into account inflation and currency fluctuations. Meanwhile in the U.K., the film had the worst week-to-week drop-off in the top ten down 44% to $3.02 million on 364 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.49 million, but that is about a week away from surpassing the $16.21 million Rush Hour 2 made in total in that market.
