November 17, 2008

The top film on the international scene was published on Wednesday and can be found here.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year remained in second place with $14.63 million on 4413 screens in 30 markets for a total of $110.38 million internationally. This is more than it will make domestically by the end of its run, and at this pace hitting $200 million worldwide will not be an issue, as it has openings in Russia, Australia, and Japan still to go. Its biggest market of the weekend was Italy where it made $2.60 million on 487 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.02 million. Meanwhile, its biggest market overall was the U.K. with $31.44 million, including $2.39 million on 470 screens over the past weekend.

  • Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa remained in third place with $9.57 million on 956 screens in 6 markets for a still early total of $40.50 million, however, that was a sharp drop-off from last weekend. Almost all of that came from Russia where it was down 56% to $7.26 million on 850 screens over the weekend for a total of $35.84 million after two.
  • Saw V returned to the top five with $5.93 million on 2346 screens in 30 markets for a total of $26.03 million. This includes a fourth place, $1.74 million opening on 181 screens in France. The film opens in Spain this weekend, Japan at the end of the month, and doesn't finish its international run till next year.
  • Body Of Lies returned to the international chart in fifth place with $5.74 million on 1224 screens in 13 markets for a still early total of $16.87 million. The film debuted in first place in Spain with $2.31 million on 302 screens, while it had to settle for second place in France with $2.40 million on 428.
  • Golmaal Returns fell to sixth place with $4.32 million on 923 screens In 17 markets for a total of $15.28 million. However, while it was down 44% and it is unlikely that it will open in and additional markets of note, it has already earned more than a lot of Indian films do, and enough to be considered a hit.
  • Red Cliff remained in first place in Japan with $4.08 million on 544 screens for a total of $17.9o million in that market and $87.23 million in total.
  • No major openings didn't hurt Burn After Reading too much as it slipped just one spot to eighth with $3.67 million on 2183 screens in 29 markets for a total of $63.62 million.
  • Nights in Rodanthe rocketed into the top ten with $2.52 million on 1344 screens in 31 markets for a total of $24.95 million. This includes a first place, $946,000 opening on 240 screens in Australia, which is equivalent to about $10 million here, if you take into account the relative size of the two markets.
  • Public Enemy Number One Part 1 remained in third place in France with $2.89 million on 491 screens, but that was for the full week. Over the weekend it made $2.41 million on 522 screens in 3 markets for a total of $15.59 million after three.
  • Vicky Cristina Barcelona just slipped out of the top ten with $2.12 million on 845 screens in 15 markets for a total of $39.28 million internationally, with openings in Germany, Russia, Australia, and the U.K. still ahead.
  • Welcome to the Sticks climbed to 12th place with $2.08 million on 533 screens in 8 markets for a total of $220.87 million internationally. Its biggest market of the weekend was Germany, where it added $984,000 on 174 screens for a total of $2.59 million.
  • Mamma Mia! fell 47% to $1.87 million on 1599 screens in 38 markets over the weekend, but climbed into 13th place. Overall the film has now made $418.27 million, which is close to three times what it earned domestically.
  • WALL-E is coasting on holdovers and will until it opens in Japan at the beginning of December. This week it made $1.83 million on 1897 screens in 16 markets for a total of $262.09 million internationally and $485.10 million worldwide.
  • Fashion is doing respectable business in India, but it is struggling elsewhere with $1.76 million on 682 screens in 17 markets for a total of $7.46 million.
  • Eagle Eye fell to 16th place with $1.69 million on 1539 screens in 43 markets for a total of $70.23 million.
  • Pride and Glory made its debut on the international chart thanks to its opening in the U.K., however, it only managed fifth place with $625,000 on 258 screens. Overall it made $1.67 million on 791 screens in 7 markets for a total of $3.48 million.
  • Yes! Pretty Cure 5 opened in second place in Japan and 18th internationally with $1.61 million on 150 screens. Given its per screen average, it should last a long time in its native market.
  • Suspect X slipped to third place in Japan while remaining in 19th place internationally with $1.58 million on 323 screens over the weekend for a total of $40.76 million.
  • Despite no major openings, Journey to the Centre of the Earth climbed into 20th place with $1.56 million on 616 screens in 19 markets for a total of $110.41 million. It has made more internationally than it has made domestically, and it is likely that the film made enough to show a profit early in its domestic run.
  • Space Chimps fell 67% to just $1.45 million on 985 screens in 12 markets for a total of $30.76 million.
  • Likewise, Hellboy II - The Golden Army fell 67% to $1.25 million on 1037 screens in 18 markets, but it has made $78.66 million internationally, which is almost twice as much as the original made.
  • Mirrors climbed a spot to 23rd place with $1.23 million on 1350 screens in 23 markets for a total of $37.38 million. The film opened in Australia over the weekend, but only managed sixth place with a tiny $243,000 on 148 screens.
  • Ek Vivaah... Aisa Bhi opened in its native India, and more than a dozen other markets, but only scored $1.19 million on 523 screens in 14 markets, which is rather poor for this type of film.
  • Bouquet Final opened in seventh place in France and 25th internationally with just $1.18 million on 350 screens.
  • Max Payne fell more than 60% again this past weekend down to $1.14 million on 1437 screens in 25 markets for a total of $26.32 million. It's not done its international run, but it will need to turn things around fast for it to become just a midlevel hit.
  • Ghost Town returned to the international chart in 27th place with $1.13 million on 336 screens for a total of $7.30 million, all of which has come from the U.K.
  • Le Crime Est Notre Affaire barely managed to hang onto a spot in the top ten in France but stayed in the top 30 internationally with $1.07 million on 323 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.27 million after four.
  • Handsome Suits pulled in $1.02 million on 233 screens during its second weekend of release for a total of $3.98 million. That was enough for fourth place in Japan and 29th place internationally.
  • Rounding out the top 30 was Death Race with $1.01 million on 870 screens in 24 markets for a total of $29.20 million. The film has yet to open in Germany, Italy, and Japan, among other markets, and it should top its domestic total when it does.
