Weekend Estimates: Hellboy Healthy, Journey Jovial, Dave Disastrous
July 13, 2008
The weekend belongs to Hellboy, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
With $35.9 million, the franchise looks as though it's well and truly reborn, and a $100 million box office run seems assured.
Journey to the Center of the Earth was also solid, with $20.6 million. That's particularly strong given the relatively small number of digital 3-D screens installed in the US so far.
But the other opener had a harder time...
Meet Dave was almost totally ignored by movie-goers, earning just $5.3 million.
That's not Eddie Murphy's worst opening weekend -- Pluto Nash would take some beating on that score -- but it is immensely disappointing.
It even makes the debut of The Love Guru look good.
Among returning movies, Hancock was strong again, with $33 million, and a drop of less than 50% from its opening weekend.
The best performer, though, was Kit Kittredge, which declined only 29% from its disappointing wide opening.
That's almost certainly a case of too little, too late, but it does speak to the good word of mouth it has generated.
