DVD Rentals: New Releases are Angelic

December 14, 2009

Plenty of new releases reached the top 30 on this week's rental chart, including the three at the top. Angels & Demons was numbers one, beating out Four Christmases with roughly 50% more rentals. Funny People opened in third place, which was much better than it did on the sales chart, and suggests that for most it was a try before you buy situation. The best of the holdovers was Star Trek, while The Ugly Truth rounded out the top five.

Santa Buddies opened in 16th place, which is much weaker than its performance on the sales chart, but that's common for kids movies. On the other hand, Shorts opened in 18th place on the rental chart and didn't reach the top 30 in sales. Staten Island opened in 20th place on the rental chart, while it won't be released to purchase until next week. The last new release to chart was Janky Promoters way down in 29th place, but that's not bad considering the rocky road it had to travel to get released.

Overall rentals hit $158.7 million, according to Home Media Magazine's estimate, which is 11.1% higher than last week and $13.8% higher than the same week last year.
