International Top Five - Up Hits New Heights

October 28, 2009

Up remained in first place on the international chart with $20.19 million on 4572 screens in 26 markets for a total of $324.88 million internationally and $617.79 million worldwide. During the past week, the film reached two major milestones: $300 million internationally and $600 million worldwide. It is the fifth Pixar film to reach the former milestone and the fourth to reach the latter. Additionally, with strong holds in the U.K. ($6.21 million on 762 screens over the weekend for a total of $32.07 million after three) and Italy ($4.57 million on 624 screens over the weekend for a total of $13.84 million after two) and an upcoming opening in Japan, it has a shot at $700 million worldwide.

G-Force remained in second place with $8.27 million on 2599 screens in 31 markets for a total of $138.48 million internationally and $257.03 million worldwide. The film was down a mere 7% during its second weekend in France adding $2.6 million over the weekend for a total of $5.4 million so far. It was also still potent in Germany with $2.95 million on 532 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.57 million after two while in Spain it earned $1.73 million on 447 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.85 million after three. The film opens in Japan in March, and when it does it could reach $300 million worldwide, which is far better than expected.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs reached the top five for the first time in its run earning third place with $7.53 million on 2829 screens in 41 markets for a total of $43.93 million. The film dominated Russia with $3.69 million on 438 screens, which was more than twice the second place film. On the other hand, it opened with $1.7 million in France, which was enough for fourth place. The film still has a few major markets left to open in, but it has almost no chance of matching its domestic total on the international scene. It could reach $200 million worldwide, on the other hand, which is more than enough to make the studio happy.

Astro Boy charted for the first time in fourth place with $7.42 million on 1960 screens in 6 markets over the weekend for an early total of $9.68 million so far. Much of that came from China, but numbers were not available at press time. Numbers were known for its Russian debut, where it earned fifth place with $637,000 on 387 screens. Meanwhile in Australia it added $528,000 on 207 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.82 million after two. It is already ahead of its domestic pace and its international run has just started. That's the good news. It is too soon to tell if the film will be a major hit internationally, or just an international hit when compared to its domestic box office.

Rounding out the top five was Lucky Luke with $6.17 million on 730 screens in 3 markets. Of that, $5.80 million was earned on 687 screens in France. This was just ahead of the second place film and fellow local hit, Le Petit Nicolas.
