International Top Five - Up Floats to the Top
October 14, 2009
It took a long time, but after 20 weeks of release, Up finally took top spot on the international box office this past weekend. It earned $21.73 million on 3,616 screens in 25 markets over the weekend for a total of $257.39 million internationally and $550.03 million worldwide.
Almost half of the film's weekend haul came from the U.K., where it opened in first place with $10.10 million on 411 screens.
It is still going strong in Germany after pulling in $3.17 million on 846 screens over the weekend for a total of $20.22 million after four.
At this pace, it should earn around $30 million in that market, and with debuts in Italy and Japan, as well as other, smaller markets, the film should have no issue reaching $600 million worldwide, while $700 million isn't out of the question.
Inglourious Basterds returned to the top five with $8.97 million on 2,813 screens in 49 markets over the weekend for a total of $155.21 million internationally and $273.50 million worldwide.
The film opened in second place in Brazil with $911,000 on 153 screens while it rose to first place in Italy with $2.43 million on 458 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.10 million after two.
The film opens in Mexico next weekend, South Korea at the end of the month, and Japan next month, and by the time it finishes, it will have reached $300 million worldwide, which is about $100 million more than Quentin Tarantino's previous best.
Le Petit Nicolas climbed into third place with $8.50 million on 646 screens in 3 markets over the weekend for a total of $19.31 million after two.
The film was down just 12% in its native France, adding $6 million over the weekend for a total of $14 million.
G-Force was the second film to return to the top five, as it came within a hair's breath of third place with $8.47 million on 2,249 screens in 32 markets for a total of $112.35 million.
This includes a second place, $2.12 million opening on 336 screens in Spain.
Meanwhile, it remains strong in Australia earning $1.29 million on 327 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.01 million after four.
The film opens in France and Germany this weekend, which means it could climb higher on the chart.
The Ugly Truth earned $8.24 million on 2,333 screens in 61 markets for a total of $81.73 million so far.
Its best market of the weekend was Germany where it added $2.64 million on 506 screens for a total of $8.73 million after two; however, this was a decline of 47% from its opening.
That said, with an opening in Spain next weekend and Italy next month, the film should have no trouble reaching $100 million internationally to go with its nearly $90 million domestic total.
