International Top of the Chart - Ice Age Freezes out the Competition

July 8, 2009

Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs expanded worldwide over the weekend pulling in an incredible $135.16 million on 11,791 screens in 101 markets over the weekend for a total of $151.70 million after two. This is the sixth biggest international opening and the biggest for an animated film.

The film had the best ever opening in Russia with $16.40 million on 1098 screens over the weekend for total of $20.89 million. It set the record in a couple of Latin American markets as well pulling in $9.45 million on 1007 screens over the weekend and $10.01 million in total, while just south in Brazil it made $4.48 million on 765 screens over the weekend and $7.37 million in total.

It wasn't quite record-breaking in Germany, but it still pulled in first place with $15.99 million on 861 screens. It also earned first place in the U.K. with $12.32 million on 526 screens and in Spain with $7.45 million on 660 screens over the weekend and $8.64 million in total.

On the other hand, the film finished in second place in Australia with $4.64 million on 422 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.43 million. This was just behind the second weekend of Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen.

While the film is now playing in more than 100 countries, it has yet to open in China, Japan, South Korea, and Italy, and should have some solid upside left ahead of it.

Second place went to Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen, but we will get to that release, and the rest of the multi-million dollar movies over the weekend.
