April 19, 2009
The top of the chart on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.
Knowing was able to sneak into third place, despite earlier reports to the contrary. Over the past weekend it earned $13.35 million on 2943 screens in 24 markets for a total of $47.80 million. The film opened in a number of smaller markets, but most of the growth came from two major markets: Germany and Spain. In the former it made $1.47 million on 440 screens, while in the latter it made a more impressive $2.35 million on 330 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.11 million. As far as holdovers are concerned, the film held steady in France down just 16% to $3.06 million on 348 screens, but that was for the full week. After two weeks the film now has $6.72 million in that market.
- Red Cliff: Part II returned to the charts in fifth place with $6.69 million on 729 screens over the weekend, for a total of $71.76 million so far. Its weekend haul came entirely from its first place debut in Japan, but its per theater average was a little lower than anticipated. Still strong, but lower than anticipated.
- Slumdog Millionaire fell out of the top five taking in $6.19 million on 2888 screens in 48 markets for a total of $199.41 million internationally and $340.28 million worldwide. It is virtually guaranteed that the film has reached $200 million internationally, while it will have little trouble getting to $350 million worldwide.
- 17 Again made its debut internationally a week ahead of its domestic debut earning seventh place with $6.05 million on 629 screens in 2 markets. This includes a third place debut in the U.K. with $3.78 million on 407 screens, while it opened first in Australia with $2.28 million on 222 screens.
- Crows Zero 2 opened in eighth place internationally and second place in Japan with $5.67 million on 314 screens giving it a very impressive per screen average of $18,063, which was nearly double the average earned by first place Red Cliff: Part II.
- Gran Torino is nearing $100 million internationally with a running tally of $94.97 million after earning $4.56 million on 2087 screens in 41 markets. The film's only major opening was in Russia, but it struggled there with $139,000 on 119 screens, which was only enough for eighth place.
- Race to Witch Mountain expanded into a trio of major markets, but was weak in all of them. In Australia it did the best with $927,000 on 289 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.36 million. It struggled in the U.K. missing the top five with $856,000 on 409 screens, while it bombed in Germany placing ninth with $287,000 on 310 screens. Add in its weak legs domestically, and the studio will not be terribly happy with this result, but it should still make a profit sometime during its home market run.
- Safari fell out of the top ten internationally with $3.90 million on 598 screens in 3 markets for a total of $9.69 million. It slipped to second place in France with $4.27 million on 573 screens, but that was for the full week. Its total there is now $9.14 million.
- Taras Bulba fell to second place in Russia with $3.35 million on 648 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.82 million in total. Internationally it fell to 12th place with $3.76 million on 738 screens in 2 markets for a total of $13.22 million.
- Marley & Me is shedding screens and markets while trying to reach $100 million internationally. This past weekend it managed $3.18 million on 1949 screens in 23 markets for a total of $91.28 million, which keeps it on pace to reach $100 million, barely.
- Duplicity opened in two major markets, but like it has so many times before, it struggled earning fourth place in both. In Italy it brought in $916,000 on 200 screens, while in Mexico it managed just $585,000 on 258 screens.
- The Boat That Rocked landed in 15th place with $2.56 million on 761 screens in 3 markets for a total of $6.91 million. This includes a third place opening in Australia where it made $1.00 million on 293 screens, while it placed fourth in neighboring New Zealand with $138,000 on 58. Meanwhile in the U.K., it added $1.42 million on 460 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.83 million after two.
- Paul Blart: Mall Cop fell to 15th place with $2.53 million on 1345 screens in 16 markets for a total of $24.72 million.
- Another weekend without major openings left Confessions Of A Shopaholic falling to 17th place with $1.96 million on 1397 screens in 31 markets for a total of $52.33 million. Its did open in Brazil, but struggled earning 6th place with $222,000, but it was playing on only 78 screens, which is equivalent to about 1000 theaters here.
- Private Eye remained in first place in South Korea while slipping to 18th place internationally with $1.90 million on 373 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.67 million after two.
- Bank Error In Your Favour opened in fifth place in France with $1.89 million on 397 screens, which was enough for 19th place internationally.
- Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea opened in seventh place in France with $1.95 million on 251 screens, but that was for the full week. Over the weekend, the film added $1.77 million on 337 screens in 4 markets for a total of $179.50 million in total.
- The Reader fell out of the top 20 with $1.61 million on 1209 screens in 26 markets for a total of $50.39 million. The film is rapidly running out of new markets to open in, but it still a financial success, and will show a profit early in its home market run.
- La Première Etoile landed in sixth place in France with $2.26 million on 350 screens, but that was for the full week. Over the weekend the film made $1.59 million on 351 screens in 2 markets for a total of $7.96 million.
- He's Just Not That Into You fell from 10th to 23rd with $1.50 million on 913 screens in 19 markets for a total of $63.91 million. The film has yet to open in Japan, but it has no legitimate shot at matching its domestic total internationally. That said, it has already made enough to show a profit.
- Coco fell to ninth place in France with $1.42 million on 628 screens during the full week, for a total of $22.44 million after a month of release. Over the weekend the film added $1.37 million on 662 screens in 3 markets for a total of $26.55 million.
