International Top Five - Valkyrie Explodes on the International Box Office

January 28, 2009

Valkyrie started its international run this weekend scoring first place with $12.85 million on 2089 screens in 13 markets for a total of $14.16 million. Its best market was Germany, no real surprise there given its setting, where it made $3.65 million on 689 screens. The film earned second place in both the U.K. with $2.54 million on 450 screens and in South Korea with $1.47 million on 479 screens over the weekend and $1.90 million.

Seven Pounds was very close behind in second place with $12.64 million on 3316 screens in 24 markets for a total of $60.17 million. No openings hurt, but it did remain in first place in Spain with $2.60 million on 322 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.46 million after two. It also did well in France with $2.12 million on 346 screens over the weekend and it now has $5.80 million in that market after two. In Italy it made $1.57 million on 378 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.73 million after three, while in the U.K. it added $1.49 million on 391 screens to its total of $4.60 million after two.

Yes Man opened in first place in Russia with $2.94 million on 451 screens over the weekend, which was enough to help the film remain in third place internationally. Overall it made $10.94 million on 3244 screens in 52 markets for a total of $85.47 million internationally. It is about one week from topping its domestic total, while it should reach its first major international milestone shortly after that.

Twilight was down to fourth place with $10.12 million on 2915 screens in 45 markets for a total of $160.29 million. It remained in first place in France with $2.66 million on 457 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.59 million after three. On the other hand, it slipped to second place in Germany, but with a higher weekend total of $3.55 million on 612 screens for a total of $11.43 million after two.

Slumdog Millionaire reached the top five for the first time during its international run with $9.72 million on 1103 screens in 11 markets for a total of $30.12 million. The film opened in India over the weekend to mixed results. On the one hand, it opened in second place with $1.9 million on 351 screens; on the other hand, there were widespread reports of protests and security had to be increased at some theaters. Apparently there were some who objected to the term, 'Slumdog' in the title. Back at the box office, the film grew by 7% during its third weekend in the U.K. added $3.85 million on 379 screens for a total of $14.04 million after three weeks of release. This is equivalent to nearly $100 million domestically. In France it was down just 6% added $1.28 million on 156 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.91 million after two.
