DVD Sales: Helping Itself to First Place
December 20, 2011
New releases took four or five of the top five spots on the DVD sales chart this week. (The Smurfs is a bit of a complicated case, but more on that in a second.) First place went to The Help with 1.75 million units sold generating $29.78 million in revenue.
The Hangover II placed second with 1.29 million units / $19.36 million during its opening week, which was about a third of what the original opened with. The Smurfs managed third place during its first full week on the home market with 644,000 units / $10.94 million for the week giving it a total of 1.12 million units / $19.02 million. Cowboys & Aliens debuted in fourth place with 578,000 units / $9.81 million. It was an expensive movie to make and it hasn't performed up to expectations thus far. Perhaps it will do better on Blu-ray. Rounding out the top five was Mr. Popper's Penguins with 568,000 units / $9.65 million. This is roughly inline with expectations.
The only other new release to chart was The Debt, which earned 13th place with 123,000 units / $2.08 million. On the one hand, the film didn't open truly wide, so struggling on the home market is not a shock. On the other hand, it should have sold more than it did.
