Weekend Estimates: Immortals Easily Wins Three-Way Race
November 13, 2011
Relativity will enjoy a relatively comfortable win at the box office this weekend, based on Sunday estimates. 3D fantasy action movie Immortals is set to earn about $32 million, according to their Sunday estimate, and will comfortably beat fellow-opener Jack and Jill. The Adam Sandler comedy is projected to earn $26 million, which makes it essentially tied with Puss in Boots. The animated adventure will be down just 22% this weekend and has passed $100 million at the box office in its third weekend.
This week's other new wide release, J. Edgar will post a respectable $11.47 million or so, which is about a par score for an adult-skewing drama.
Among returning films, Paranormal Activity 3 will top $100 million in its 4th (and essentially final) weekend. The Way continues its interesting run with another $334,000 estimate. Although it's floating on the fringes of the top 20, its per theater average has increased for the last two weeks, helped by good word-of-mouth.
Melancholia is the stand-out limited release this weekend. The Lars Von Trier drama will pick up around $260,000 in 19 theaters for an average just shy of $14,000. Immortals is the only other film currently projected to average over $10,000 per theater.
