Blu-ray Sales: Green Lantern can't Dethrone Lion King

October 26, 2011

Despite the presence of four new releases in the top ten on the Blu-ray sales chart, none were able to overtake The Lion King for top spot. It sold an additional 496,000 units generating $12.39 million for totals of 2.03 million units / $57.86 million after two weeks of release. Green Lantern was very, very close behind with 494,000 units / $11.95 million. Its opening week Blu-ray ratio was 61%, which is fantastic. However, its overall home market sales were disappointing given the film's bloated production budget. Horrible Bosses debuted in third place with 325,000 units / $7.00 million. Its 42% opening week Blu-ray ratio is very impressive for a comedy. Fast Five fell to fourth place with 307,000 units / $7.01 million over the week and 1.41 million units / $29.63 million after two. Transformers: Dark of the Moon rounded out the top five with 213,000 units / $4.63 million over the week and now has sold 2.30 million units and generated $49.03 million after three weeks of release.

Zookeeper missed the top five with 113,000 units / $2.70 million, giving it an opening week Blu-ray ratio of 28%. It underperformed at the box office and it is doing even worse on the home market. The Tree of Life was only released on a Blu-ray / DVD Combo Pack, which sold 56,000 units generating $1.34 million in sales. Further down the list we find Chuck: Season Four in 19th place with 17,000 units / $760,000. For a TV on DVD release, it's earned a very strong opening Blu-ray ratio of 27%. Bones: Season Six was not as strong earning 22nd place with 10,000 units / $448,000, giving it an opening Blu-ray ratio of just 8%. Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer was right behind in 23rd place with 8,000 units / $224,000. Its opening Blu-ray ratio was better at 12%, which is weak for the format's average, but on par with a lot of live action kids films.

After a record-breaking week, the overall Blu-ray sales fell back to earth, down 41% in terms of units and 43% in terms of revenue. Compared to last year, on the other hand, Blu-ray sales were higher by nearly identical margins (up 41% in terms of units and 45% in terms of revenue). DVD sales were the opposite growing a little bit from last week, but plummeting from last year. The overall Blu-ray ratio was weaker than last week, but higher than last year with 48% of total units and 57% of total revenue.

Looking forward to next week, Blu-ray sales will be boosted by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and should rebound from this week. Last year's biggest new release was Predators, but the best selling DVD was still How to Train Your Dragon.
