Weekend Estimates: Taken 2 Posts Top 3 October Opening
October 7, 2012
Correction: Frankenweenie and The Perks of a Wallflower were incorrectly reported as finishing in fourth and tenth place in our original report. They are both one place lower.
After Hotel Transylvania's record-breaking September opening last week, Taken 2 will make its mark on the October record book this weekend, with Fox projecting a $50 million opening, most likely enough for a place in the top 3 October weekends. The film still has a shot at ousting Paranormal Activity 3 from the top of that list, although it would have to have a very strong Sunday to break the record. Regardless of that, we're looking at another up weekend and 2012 will pull further ahead of last year's pace.
Pitch Perfect is also set for a great weekend, and should post around $14.7 million from 2,770 theaters for third place, behind Hotel Transylvania's $26.3 million second-weekend haul. Frankenweenie will come in a disappointing fifth with about $11.5 million.
In limited release, The Perks of Being a Wallflower just misses the top 10 with an estimated $1.5 million or so from 221 locations. Its average of $6,900 suggests some further expansion is possible, although not perhaps a great deal. Further down the chart, The Paperboy is projected to top the $10,000 per theater mark with $110,000 in 11 venues, and The House I Live In will come close, although it is only playing in two theaters.
