International Box Office: Rises Returns to the Top

September 5, 2012

Thanks to its opening in China, The Dark Knight Rises returned to the top of the international chart with $49.8 million on 10,000 screens in 64 markets. The film now has $577.7 million internationally and $1.009 billion worldwide, becoming just the twelfth film to reach that milestone. In China, the film earned $28.5 million on 4,100 screens, which was easily enough for first place. The film had to settle for second place in Italy with $4.95 million on 914 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $8.75 million.

The Amazing Spider-Man swung into second place with $32.93 million on 7,140 screens in 59 markets for a total of $474.54 million internationally and $734.07 million worldwide. It also opened in China, but made its debut last Monday. Over the full week, it pulled in $33.3 million, of which $14.5 million was earned over the three-day weekend. The film has already earned enough to justify yet another installment, and it has yet to reach the lucrative home market.

Despite a trio of first place major market openings, The Expendables 2 fell to third place with $26.00 million on 6,353 screens in 42 markets for a total of $104.24 million internationally, which is more than it cost to make. It's still going to need to do some work to break even, but the studio obviously thinks it is going to get there, because they've given the go ahead to a third film in the franchise. The film's best new market of the weekend was Brazil, where it pulled in $4.16 million on 633 screens. It earned roughly the same amount in Germany with $3.83 million on 515 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.33 million. In Australia, it managed $3.03 million on 276.

Brave added $14.8 million in 51 markets to its international total, which now stands at $241.4 million, while worldwide the total rose to $473.2 million. The film has yet to open in Italy and South Korea, plus some smaller markets, so it should have no trouble getting to $500 million worldwide, which is more than enough to ensure a profit, even before it reaches the home market.

Total Recall was right behind with $12.58 million on 5,219 screens in 74 markets for a total of $98.31 million. This weekend it opened in the U.K. with $3.96 million on 464 screens, which was enough for first place. The film has yet to open in Italy and Spain, but it will need a lot of help if it is to make a profit anytime soon.

The Bourne Legacy earned $12.4 million on 3,449 screens on 36 markets for a still relatively early total of $62.14 million. The film opened in first place in Russia with $3.72 million on 670 screens, which is acceptable, but nothing more. The film still has a lot of major market openings to go, but it is struggling compared to the previous installments.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted fell to seventh place with $9.48 million on 2,944 screens in 34 markets for a total of $388.55 million internationally and a worldwide total of $602.24 million. $600 million is more than enough money to justify yet another installment in the franchise, plus the film has yet to open in Australia, Germany, the U.K., and other markets.

Step Up Revolution returned to the top ten in eighth place with $9.28 million on 2,041 screens in 38 markets for a total of $71.05 million internationally. The film was a disappointment domestically, but it is making up for it on the international scene. This past weekend, the film nabbed second place in Germany with $3.35 million on 453 screens.

Prometheus fell to ninth place with $8.52 million on 3,756 screens in 8 markets for a total of $229.55 million internationally and $355.85 million worldwide. This is obviously enough to make the studio happy, because they are already working on a sequel.

Ted rounded out the top ten with $7.0 million on 2,305 screens in 34 markets for a total of $169.04 million internationally and $383.80 million worldwide. There were no major market openings this weekend, but it has yet to open in Brazil, Mexico, Italy, and France, as well as smaller markets.

We continue updating The Avengers, which rose to 17th place with $3.64 million over the weekend for totals of $882.6 million internationally and $1.502 billion worldwide. Pretty much all of its international haul came from Japan, where it added $3.64 million on 841 screens over the weekend for a total of $36.23 million after three weeks of release.
