DVD Sales: Lorax Sells Faster than Thneeds
August 22, 2012
Doctor Seuss' The Lorax led the new releases earning first place on the DVD sales chart. It sold 1.96 million units and generated $33.38 million in revenue. It is already the sixth best selling DVD for 2012.
Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt was way back in second place with 119,000 units sold and $2.13 in revenue. That's a solid opening for a TV movie. Hatfields and McCoys slipped to third place with 115,000 units / $2.30 million units giving it totals of 511,000 units / $10.20 million after two. Marley was right behind with 110,000 units / $1.43 million. This is a stunning opening for a documentary. Despicable Me leapt into fifth place with 69,000 units / $669,000. After more than a year on the home market, the film has sold 8.17 million units and generated $139.31 million in total sales. We might not see another new release get that far again, as even kids movies are starting to perform better on Blu-ray than on DVD.
Grimm: Season One just missed the top five landing in sixth place with 63,000 units / $1.88 million.
